Before debuting, she was rejected several times by different South Korean agencies. She then made her debut in Japan in September 2004 at the age of 16 with her first single, "Yubikiri". The Japanese version was released one month later, and despite being included as an OST for the Fuji TV drama "Destiny of Love", it was not a success.
She found mainstream success with her second Japanese single, "Houkiboshi", which was included as an OST of the anime series "Bleach". The song debuted on the Oricon daily chart at #18 and peaked at #12, making her (at that time) the second South Korean artist, after BoA, to break into the Oricon top 20.
She made her debut in South Korea in December 2006 with the single "Audition (Time2Rock)". However, she did not find commercial success in her country until the release of the album "The Perfect Day to Say I Love You" with the lead single "Password 486" in March 2007.
In May 2011, she sued her agency, Lion Media, looking to terminate her contract after arguing its questionable validity. The case was resolved in February 2012 with a verdict in her favor. She then signed with C9 Entertainment (C9 엔터테인먼트) and has been able to find more stability. She is regarded as one of the country's best singer-songwriters.

Favorite Korean Drama OSTs from a Non K-Pop Fan's Perspective
Editorials - Dec 17, 2020
I sometimes feel like an anomaly who loves Korean Dramas but am not a fan of K-pop music. So wanted to put a list of my favorite tracks from dramas and find some common ground with people who love K- pop music. And make some friends along the way perhaps?
