He attended the Shun Tak Fraternal Association Leung Kit Wah Primary School and later graduated in 2002 from the Catholic Po Chiu School. After completing Form 5 at St. Bonaventure College, he transferred to Lung Cheung Government Secondary School for Form 6 and Form 7. In 2009, after completing the pre-university program, he pursued an associate degree in environmental science at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education.
In 2010, he signed with TVB. In 2015, he signed with Star Entertainment for his music career, winning four New Artist awards and achieving the New Artist Gold Award at the 2015 Metro Radio Hits Awards. He also won the "My Favorite Male Singer" award and the "My Favorite Song Award" for "Turns Out She Doesn't Love Me Enough" at the 2015 Metro Radio Hits Awards. In 2016, he again won the "My Favorite Male Singer" award at the 2016 Metro Radio Hits Awards.
In 2020, after his contract with Star Entertainment expired, he signed with Sunny Idea. In 2022, following the expiration of his contract with TVB, he signed with Shaw Brothers as well as Star Entertainment.
In 2022, after the expiration of his contract with TVB, James Ng signed with Shaw Brothers and joined Star Entertainment. He announced his marriage to Japanese news anchor Hamaguchi Aiko and signed with Star Dream Entertainment.
