Sibelle Hu is a Taiwanese actress born in a military dependents' village in Taiwan, with roots in Huaian, Jiangsu Province, China. She graduated from the evening division of Taipei First Girls' High School and the Department of History at National Taiwan University in 1981.

Hu began her career in the film industry in the late 1970s. In the 1980s, she trained under Hung Kin Bao to become a martial arts star and learned Cantonese. In 2003, she was appointed as a member of the Jiangsu Provincial Political Consultative Conference, a position she holds to this day.

After a 17-year break from acting, Hu made her return in the 2014 film "I Am Not a Star".

In her personal life, Hu was briefly engaged to Tang Chong Sheng, a former leader of the Northern Alliance gang. They called off their engagement in 1994 following objections from Hu's mother. In 1998, she married ophthalmologist Ho Chih Ping, who previously served as the Secretary for the Hong Kong Civil Affairs Bureau. Following her marriage, Hu reduced her public appearances.

In 1989, during the filming of The Demon Huntress, an explosion accident left Hu with severe injuries, though her face was not disfigured. This incident nearly led her to quit acting.
