He joined Shaw Brothers in 1956 and directed more than 20 films for them, many of which have become memorable classics, including award-winning Diau Charn which won Li the Best Director Award and The Kingdom And The Beauty, which won the Best Film at the 5th and 6th Asian Film Festivals. In 1963, Li won the Golden Horse Best Director award for The Love Eterne.
He died from a heart attack in 1996 in Beijing while working on a T.V. series.
