In 1977, Tsai, and two of his filmmaker colleagues, Law Kar and Wu Hao developed the Film Cultural Center which aimed at promoting the film culture in Hong Kong. In 1978, Tsai worked with producer Wu Szu-yuan and wrote the Jackie Chan starring Snake In The Eagle’s Shadow, which officially started Tsai’s film career.
In 1980, Tsai made his first directorial debut, Encore, which received brilliant reviews; it marked the start of HK’s new wave of teenage movies.
He next joined Shaw Brothers and made Teenage Dreamers and Hong Kong Hong Kong.
He immigrated to Canada in 1990, and then returned to Hong Kong in 1993 to teach in the School of Film and Television of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In 1994, he directed Naughty Couple.
