Graduated from Matsuyama Junior High School in1929. In 1937, he joined Shinko Kinema Kyoto Studio as an assistant director, admiring senior junior high school students Daisuke Ito and Mansaku Itami, and stayed after the merger with Daiei. He studied under Akira Nobuchi and Kazuo Mori and served as chief assistant director in Kenji Mizoguchi's later work. In 1954, he made his directorial debut with "Sengata Heiji Prey, Ghost Daimyo" and specialized in historical drama. He left Daiei in 1965 and worked on CF and documentary films, but after that he started working in welfare.
