Her fascination with movies started when she joined the Chinese film translation group YDY in school. She translated hundreds of movies and series for Chinese audiences and discovered her love for filmmaking. After graduating from Shanghai Theatre Academy with a BA in directing, she began working in script development for Oscar-winning producer Bill Kong (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Lust, Caution, and Mulan). In 2017, Yuan applied to grad school to follow her dream in storytelling.
Her short film EXCHANGE was officially selected by Palm Springs International Film Festival and won ‘Best Real Image Film’ in Fantasy Film Festival. In 2020, her short film HEADING SOUTH won Best Student Film at Aspen ShortsFest 2020, and Grand Prize at 25th DGA Student Film Award. Currently, Yuan Yuan is developing her thesis film and first feature, which won the Spike Lee Film Grant 2020.
