Katayama started her career as a fashion model after becoming a finalist of "Elite Model Look 1997 in Japan. Katayama had made the covers of the fashion magazines, been featured in advertisements, and walked catwalks of Chanel, Fendi, Armani in Paris, Milan, Tokyo, and more. In 2007,Katayama was chosen to star in Osamu Minorikawa's film, "Sekai wa tokidoki utsukushii (Life can be so wonderful)", and showed exceptional presence at her debut as an actress. Also,Katayama's first photo collection, "Watashi No Sukina Kodoku (Solitude That I Relish)" photography by Miyuki Matsuda was released, which was inspired by the movie.
