Proceed to the preparatory course of Osaka Municipal Kosei Commercial School (currently Osaka Municipal Tennoji Commercial High School ). He joined Nippon Electric Power in 1920 without advancing to the main course of the school . While working at the company, graduated from Kansai University's Department of Literature .

In 1919, while still a student at a commercial school, he applied for the 5th open call for screenplays for the Takarazuka Revue under the pseudonym of Ginnosuke Muromachi, and was selected for the first prize. In July 1920, the winning script was staged as "Columbus Expedition" at the Takarazuka Public Hall Theater.

In 1926, there was talk of joining the Takarazuka Revue at the invitation of Kazuhisa Hisamatsu , but he refused to join the company because he felt that the attitude of Takarazuka executives at the interview was arrogant . In 1926, he was transferred to the Tokyo Construction Office and moved to Tokyo . In 1928, he was seconded to the newly established Hakone Tozan Railway Co., Ltd. due to the merger of Nippon Electric Power and Odawara Electric Railway , and lived in Odawara . Responsible for the construction of the Gora Hotel as a business manager .

While they were employees of the Hakone Tozan Railway, he studied with aspiring playwright, Kido Okamoto . The pseudonym of "Hideji Hojo" was soon named by Kido, and is named after Mr. Hojo , the Sengoku daimyo of Odawara . He participated in the monthly magazine "Stage" sponsored by Kido.

In 1937, the play "Awards Ceremony" released on "Stage" was performed in a new national drama and made his debut on the stage, becoming a playwright who also works as an office worker. After leaving Kido in 1939, he became a playwright and moved to Tokyo. In 1940, he studied under Shin Hasegawa and participated in the screenplay study group "26th Day Meeting" sponsored by Hasegawa . In 1940, won the Shinchosha Bungei Prize for "His Excellency". Since 1944, he has been the General Manager of the General Affairs Department of the Japanese Literature Bulletin National Assembly . In the same year, he participated in the 3rd Daitoa Literary Convention held in Nanjing as the person in charge of the Japanese side.

After the war, he was also in charge of directing many of his own works.

In 1947, " Osho " starring Tatsumi Ryutaro, who was also in charge of directing the new national drama , became a big hit, and he wrote two sequels and premiered in 1950. Also, it was often made into a movie. In 1957, the Japan Shogi Association gave him the third dan amateur, and later the hit of Hideo Murata , the king , gave him the fourth dan . However, Hojo did not usually refer to shogi, and the project of "Ohsho" was also brought in by Tatsumi Ryutaro .

In 1959, in a new national drama, the " Matsukawa Incident " under trial was made into a play.

In 1951, he received the Mainichi Theater Award for "Kiri no Oto", in 1965, he received the Minister of Education Award for Art Selection for "Hideji Hojo Drama Selection", the Yomiuri Prize for Literature the following year , and the Kikuchi Kan Prize in 1973 . Person of Cultural Merit in 1987 . Other Otani Takejiro Award. He has provided numerous screenplays for Kabuki , Shinpa , Shinpa , and Takarazuka Revue, and has also directed himself. In Takarazuka, he was one of the teachers of Shinji Ueda .

Due to his success in large theater commercial theater, he has become a major figure in the theater world, and has become the president of the Japan Theater Association (1964-94. After retiring, became the honorary president) and the president of the Japan Center of the International Theater Association (since 1981). He also took the nickname of Emperor Hojo .

In 1951, he founded the "Oni no Kai", a social gathering for playwrights in large theaters .

Toho producer Mitsuru Ikeno by the project , in 1960, for the purpose of improving the quality of life for playwright, Matsutaro Kawaguchi , Minoru Nakano , Shuji Hojo, Kazuo Kikuta formed a "meeting of the playwright four people" .

Representative works include " Osho " trilogy (1947–50), "Fox and Whistleblower" (1952), "Tayu-san" (1955), "Tsukuda no Watari", "Fox Fox Tanuki Banashi", "Kitsune Kitsune Banashi" There are "Kenreimonin" and many others, such as "Suetsumuhana", "Ukifune", and "Fujitsubo", which are based on " Genji Monogatari ", and the culmination of these is called "Hojo Genji".

His later years is odd festival enthusiastic about, many books related to the odd festival.

He died on May 19, 1996 at the age of 93 due to liver failure. It is said that he was writing a new work even in his last years .
