Lucy Liu is an American actress born in New York City, United States, to Chinese immigrant parents. Her mother, Cecilia, worked as a biochemist, and her father, Tom Liu, was a civil engineer who also sold digital clock pens. In high school, she adopted the middle name Alexis.

Liu attended Joseph Pulitzer Middle School (I.S.145) and graduated from Stuyvesant High School. She began college at New York University before transferring to the University of Michigan, where she studied Asian languages and cultures and joined the Chi Omega sorority.

She became interested in acting as a child and was discovered by an agent at age 19 while riding the subway, which led to a commercial appearance. At the University of Michigan, she joined the Basement Arts theater group and was cast in the lead role in a 1989 production of Alice in Wonderland. She made her New York stage debut in Fairy Bones in 1992. That same year, Liu made her film debut in the Hong Kong production Rhythm of Destiny.

In 2015, she became a single parent to a son, Rockwell, born via gestational surrogate.
