This work won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (then Honorary Award) the following year. At this time, it was Toshiro Mifune who played Miyamoto Musashi. Rentaro Mikuni played the role of Musashi's childhood friend Matahachi, and Kaoru Yachigusa also played the role of Otsu.
