Painter, cartoonist, writer and Buddhist scholar. Husband of Kanoko Okamoto , a poet and novelist. Most of his family, starting from his son, painter Taro Okamoto, or nephew, actor Ryo Ikebe, were related to art world.

He planned a trip around the world, which he ended after visiting 9 countries in London, where he signed a publishing contract. After his wife death, he remarried to Yaeko Yamamoto. On October 11, 1948, he took a bath after writing his last novel, "Ikyu Satoru," and immediately collapsed and died of intracerebral hemorrhage.
