Empezó su carrera apareciendo en producciones de teatro y como modelo en anuncios de TV. Debutó en la gran pantalla con el largometraje del director Park Chan-wook 'The Handmaiden' (2016), donde fue escogida de entre las 1,500 candidatas que fueron a la audición. A Park Chan-wook, Kim le recordaba mucho a cuando conoció por primera vez a la actriz Kang Hye-jung, quien saltó al estrellato tras su papel en la película de Park 'Oldboy' (2003).
En 2017, Kim fue co-protagonista en el thriller político '1987: When the Day Comes'.
En 2018, Kim encabezó la adaptación cinematográfica coreana del manga 'Little Forest'. Ese mismo año, hizó su debut televisivo con el melodrama histórico 'Mr. Sunshine', escrito por la guionista Kim Eun-sook, el cual pasó a ser un éxito doméstico.
Kim apareció en la lista de Forbes '30 Under 30 in the Entertainment & Sports category' en 2019.
En 2020 Kim co-protagonizará junto a Song Joong-ki la película de ciencia ficción 'Space Sweepers', la cual será dirigida por Jo Sung-hee.
En 2021 se espera que aparezca en la próxima película de ciencia ficción del director Choi Dong-hoon 'Alien', la cual se lanzará en dos partes.
