In early 2011, SM Entertainment (SM엔터테인먼트) formed two separate groups, EXO-K and EXO-M, with plans to have one perform in South Korea and the other in China.
He made his debut in April 2012 as EXO-M's lead rapper, lead dancer and sub-vocalist with the Chinese version of their first EP, "Mama". For several years, the groups performed separately until the release of their third EP "Overdose" in 2014 when they began performing as a single group and have continued to do so until now.
In May 2015, he made his acting debut with a role in the movie "You Are My Sunshine”. One month later, he set up his own agency, 黄子韬 Z.TAO Studio and debuted as a solo artist with the mini-album "T.A.O”. In August 2015, he sued SM Entertainment, wanting to cancel his contract after aggravating an ankle injury sustained during the Idol Star Athletics Championships.
In April 2017, the court ruled in favor of SM Entertainment, and despite an appeal, he lost the lawsuits definitively in October 2017. He officially left the group in March 2018.
He has been in China since early 2015 and remains active in the entertainment industry there.
Huang Zi Tao and Xu Yi Yang went public with their relationship on social media in July 2024, before Huang proposed to Xu in an episode of Chinese reality travel show Dare or Not in August 2024. On December 2, 2024, they announced their marriage.
