Most likely because of the actors' real age gap. And as soon as one of them is nearing 50 it's immediately ick for many people. Personally I don't give af, the actor doesn't even look too old because of all the filters plastered on him. But I think if they gonna insert it here, it's gonna be very mild.

You should check official CN platforms' statements about revenue and critical acclaim. It's one of the top grossing dramas on Youku platform (the one who commissioned it), it was a commercial hit. And it had a ton of commercial revenue from national CCTV broadcasting. The platform recently announced several season 2 dramas and it was amongst them for these reasons.
As for scores, nobody gives af about MDL or other western aggregators, and it has too small of a sample anyway, with very skewed bias. Wanna look for something more coherent, go look it up on Douban or smth. This drama has better score there than most of the overrated ones on MDL. You really should give up on MDL scores, anyone who's been here long enough knows there's too much overhyped bs here. If you only watch dramas based on MDL rating, you may miss lots of great ones.
