I do enjoy the show but, oh my, the FL is not the sharpest tool in the shed. To be more specific, she seems to…
If you mean her being reckless and risking her life for cases, preferring to do everything by herself, without putting anyone else in danger - it's part of her character, it gets explained why. But I can agree that this gets her in trouble quite often and people that follow her have to rescue her. Even though she doesn't want to rely on them, she does.
One repeating story loop is that a character commits a crime to attract the attention of the FL's Palace FBI to…
About the villain - you weren't paying attention in that scene, like many other were here. ML also said that if she killed the villain there, there would be no evidence left and with so many witnesses she'd be executed. But with him alive, he'll be forced to testify in front of the emperor. And what she did in the end was not in vain - after being put on house arrest, all his followers abandoned him and he lost the Emperor's favor, which allowed crown prince's scheme to work. Her being allowed to execute him legally later is not the same as cold blooded murder.
As for ML's health - I've read here from more experienced viewers that people coughing blood in CN historical dramas doesn't necessarily mean that you're fcked. It's just that you're very ill and have problems with Qi. FL through other people sent him medicine so that he'd get better, and he got way better by the end of the drama when they got back together as he was mainly lovesick. It didn't require anything extra to extrapolate, it was obvious.
( I've combined this spoiler-free post and the spoiler-filled post under it into a full-spoilers review: https://kisskh.at/profile/luckz/review/555008…
Can't say anything about actors preferences, to each their own. Personally, I quite liked all the performances here, nobody was overacting and there wasn't excessive soap as it's a detective drama. ML is rather stiff here in the beginning, but gets better. It seems it's his role here, I've seen him more lively in other dramas. FL is simply awesome to watch, rarely have I seen such compelling character and the actress plays her superbly. And though her backstory is quite common in Asian historical dramas, it's her attitude, drive and charisma that really stands out.
And as detective dramas go, they're all formulaic when you come down to it. The themes of this drama are made clear in the opening song, dunno if you saw it translated, - there is no justice to be found legally in the palace, powerful villains doing their beastly deeds and covering for each other, and wronged people without power have nowhere to turn to, so they enact revenge on their own, thus commiting even more crimes. So cases here are often not about the initial crimes, but revenge that was caused by them. And people who seek justice very rarely ask for help from the officials, as they fear repercussions from influential villains. And in the end, it goes all the way to the top, to the Emperor himself.
Personally, I found most of them quite fine, they are fast paced and you gotta pay attention. It's not molasses slow "captain obvious" cases, like in Coroner's Diary. Main leads are very smart, so they crack them quite fast. But it's not a simple procedural whodunit, every case has an epilogue to it, that mulls over the injustice that was done and some cases even pave way for betterment.
And I think the dialogues here are well done. There are no useless characters wasting your time with empty talk, there's lots of witty remarks from sharp tongued FL, and it rewards those who paid attention with meaningful talks coming into play in later episodes.
I disagree about the production and OST, I've just been recently combing through recent years' dramas and most of them look cheaper, even last year's. Costumes and visuals are especially striking. OST is simply superb with fitting lyrics (find full translation with lyrics, or look on the internet), background music is also very fine.
As for romance, it's not the main plot here, so people getting disappointed it's not in the front is all over here. No point in arguing over this bias, scores already say everything. Though, if somebody doesn't mind a sweet side story, that is slowly unfurling over the episodes, I don't think there's a reason to be disappointed, it's very believable at the very least, unlike many other dramas, where it's front loaded and out of the blue.
Anyway, just my opinion. It also benefits from a second watch.
Unfortunately too slow and boring, with lots of "Captain Obvious" moments that get mulled over for too long. Cases are nothing special to write home about either, if you've seen a decent amount of detective dramas, there's certainly nothing memorable here.
FL is also made to stand out among the rest of the cast by dumbing them down. She's made here a super pro out of nowhere, who looks like she was making 10 autopsies a day before the start of the drama. She has super modern approach to conducting them as well, that wasn't established at all in ancient China, where autopsies were considered a taboo for a long time because of religion. She's also a very knowledgable medic, that puts to shame all the rest. Furthermore, it's like there are no medics or coroners of any decent level at all there in a city. It could have been believable if it was some backwater village, but it's been deliberate and forced here to make the rest look dumb and her to stand out. So all in all, her background is not believable and feels forced - a sheltered daughter of a judge, who out of nowhere got as if decades of experience as a coroner, a sleuth and a medic. Sure, her father could have told her some, she could have read some books, and got some experience at the medical valley (though she didn't live there for 10 years like the real person she took her persona from did). But it's been made clear she wasn't allowed to conduct real autopsies or investigations before the start of drama.
ML is also pretty meh, your typical pretty boy general (though is so thin and non-muscly, it's rather hard to believe he trains in martial arts), who's got all the power to order people around and allow FL to help him conduct investigations. He's got into her out of nowhere very early on, while investigating her fraudulent persona.
It also has too many useless side characters that don't contribute much to the story.
Anyway, overhyped and I'm genuinely disappointed. Only a few CN dramas of this type to check out and nothing so far is better than the recent Unveil: Jadewind.
Well I had to drop after 10 episodes. Mainly because at no point did I connect emotionally with either character.…
Your loss, main characters here are quite believable and their personalities are explored well, it's just not front loaded in the first episodes, but slowly explored as episodes go on, especially in the later half. Though you can see how FL throws herself at cases without regard for her own health and safety from the very first episode. She suffers from survivor's guilt, people's superstition of her being cursed for surviving (a common trope in CN historical dramas) and inability to see a different life for herself other than dying for the sake of revenge. She's jaded, brooding and fatalistic. ML with his kindness, love and perceptivness helps her a lot to overcome this in the end.
If you couldn't see that I'm guessing you're one of those soap lovers, who thought it'd be a romance driven drama, instead of revenge detective story. Personally, I'm combing through all latest years CN dramas to find something of similar quality, but nothing so far - it's either cheaply made, is a sappy soap full of dumb cliches, dragging its heels for 10+ episodes too long, or the plot is dumb af. This here is a tight drama, that doesn't waste your time, with stunning visuals and great acting, that doesn't feel forced.
The plot is very well thought out, 7 cases plus overarching main case. But you can't seriously expect the plot…
Opinion. I've opinions about shitty CN soaps with overinflated ratings here as well, just not even gonna bother writing walls of text about it. It's a known MDL score bias problem. This drama, imho, is very underrated though. Sad that many people won't even give it a chance because of the score.
Dropped at episode 10. I enjoy the investigations, but there is no focused plot. I need them to show me, not tell…
The plot is very well thought out, 7 cases plus overarching main case. But you can't seriously expect the plot to spill the beans about the main case in episode 10. FL will gradually recover her memories and it will begin around episode 22. And relationships also develop gradually, but if you have low attention span, it's not gonna be for you. This drama rewards those who are paying attention.
Not that great. It's gripping at the beginning, but the whole plot is focused on one case. And it becomes very draggy half way through, with prolonged slow mo close ups and some scenes where barely anything happens. Add to that very annoying epic music that plays almost constantly that clashes with these non-epic scenes. If it's not that music, it's very corny romantic music with bad lyrics. Not sure why they inserted romance here either, it's like watching dead fish being hauled at fish market. The only saving grace here is that all that medical stuff looks rather authentic, somebody did a semblance of reasearch. It's a 7 at best tops.
It's because it's not a romance soap (though there is romance here too). Let's face it, audience on MDL is very biased. I'm sick and tired of these skewed scores, because it makes it very difficult to gauge what's worth a watch. It's a fantastic historical detective drama, with well thought out plot and characters, but I've seen people here inventing excuses to hate it because it doesn't fit their preferences or expectations.
I genuinely really liked this drama, but tell me why the revenge plan did not go through. We were with her day…
Wdym? She did expose the villain after poisoning the nobles. She wasn't allowed to kill him back then, but it still had an effect - he was dismissed and lost his allies, they all scattered like rats. Then she spied and played along with that ex-army guy who was in cohoots with the Crown Prince to use their schemes against them to take the villain down completely. He got played and had no choice but to bum rush the palace. After that she was allowed to kill him legally by the emperor's decree. I'd say justice was served.
Had to drop it. The actress is cute and plays her role well, and there are some funny scenes. But the plot is draggy and dumb af. ML also has a dorky face, couldn't get over it. For isekai lovers only.
Overhyped. It's just a 7. Too much boring back and forth between the protagonists and the police, slow mulling things over and wasting too much time on side characters' stories. Should have been 10 episodes tops to keep it tight and suspensful.
I know this not romance focused but...Spoilers please.1. What episode do they get together?2. Any breakups. How…
1. Episode 28. 2. Episode 29 - beginning of episode 34. The breakup wasn't dumb, there was a big argument. 3. No. 4. Yes. 5. There's cute romance here, but it's not the main focus. But it influenced FL's decisions in the end by a lot. 6. Depends on what you want. There are a few kissing scenes here, but the romance is more of a slow burn based on trust, instead of getting sudden hots for each other.
It's not bad writing, you just didn't get it. Even when it's basically in the intro song - there is no justice…
Yea, and FL got reprimanded for covering for her friend and even dismissed from duty for a time. But the emperor himself decided to forgive the sins of that princess, because he wanted to marry her off for political benefits and to save his family's reputation. So he covered everything up on top of it. There was no justice there from any side and that first case sets the whole theme of this drama. FL's reckless methods and struggle to uphold the law impassionately are part of her character and will have an inevitable culmination in the final episodes. Though the foreshadowing is in the very first episode - her mentor said that her heart does not lie in serving in the Investigation Bureau. And she herself stated in the intro that she used her position to seek her family's murderer, it wasn't her life's goal to stay working there. That palace is a shithole cage and FL will leave it with ML in the end.
But I can agree that this gets her in trouble quite often and people that follow her have to rescue her. Even though she doesn't want to rely on them, she does.
