simple doesn't mean ugly but ugly is when you look at the garments and the fabrics look extremely cheap and tacky, the costumes have no shape or the xianxia flow and grace to them and the color choices are unflattering on the actors wearing them....and even the wigs and hair styling look cheap because there's no volume and they've been done with no regards to the actors complexion and face shape

Look, I'm a big kiku stan but her line delivery is not the greatest and it's valid for ppl to want actors to be able to speak properly when they get paid for the job...she has time and is getting a lot better in acting and I genuinely hope she hires a pro coach and practices in the future so that she can do the dubbing herself but for now, it is much better for her to not do it...I don't speak mandarin so it's of no difference to me but native Chinese speakers critisize actors who have mediocre line delivery REALLY badly. Trust me, its better for her own sake to get dubbed by VAs 😭 And about the modern vs ancient drama part, actually it's pretty much okay even if actors have an accent in modern dramas bc it's kind of close to reality. But it's very VERY off putting to native Chinese speakers when actors have an strong accent in an ancient drama! Historical dramas need that crisp and sharp standard mandarin accent...

nrta rules require actors to do the dubbing themselves OR they HAVE to pay the VAs themselves...it means ppl who still get dubbed by VAs do probably not have an easily understandable mandarin accent
Tencent seems to have sworn an oath to make the ugliest costumes for their xianxias forever no matter who's in their shows and how much money they have in hand fkr production...like they really got one of China's biggest female celebrities in here and the garments and overall aesthetics look like some low budget project with unknown actors from 2016 😭
