"Love in Disguise" represents everything wrong with heterosexist storytelling. The production exploits the outward appearance of male-male intimacy without ever permitting that intimacy to materialize into an actual male-male/gay relationship. A woman's masculine disguise becomes the convenient narrative contrivance through which "straightness" is maintained

This is neither progressive nor subversive; rather, it exposes the homophobic attitudes that continue to permeate society. Society appears far more comfortable with unconventional gender performances than with the normalization of same-sex intimacy. In other words, gender nonconformity is permissible only within the confines of "straight" orthodoxy

I'd much prefer gay storytelling to this pitiful attempt at gender subversion
