going to start watching this drama. i wouldn't say i'm a fan of song kang (nor do i dislike him, just haven't watched enough of his dramas), but there's something about him that kinda pulls you in... he was very good in nevertheless

i don't get why there's comments that are even trying to defend the mother. i'm an asian, raised in a similar style so i do not speak from a western POV. whether it's abuse or discipline, it's undeniable that those actions have a negative psychological impact. just because her son managed to get out of the village, does not mean that any other kid who went through the same treatment would have been able to spread their wings and fly. and just because he did, does not mean it did not leave its wounds that are difficult to heal. this is TRAUMA. my mum is very similar. do i doubt that she loves me? no, i know she does love me. but does her actions still cause me pain till this day that has severely damaged my ability to form relationships with others and self-image? yes. it's abuse even if it comes from a place of love or "this is what's good for you." the funny thing though, is that i had spent so many years trying to normalise that. i think that's a very common thing among asian children, we normalise the abuse that we go through just because it's an inherent part of our culture and hesitate to draw boundaries. if there's anything i want this drama to achieve, is for parents and future parents to reflect on these outdated, damaging parenting methods and to do better.

You are exactly right, their relationship is built on two sets of neuroses that balances each other out. But somehow, their dynamic just doesn’t appeal to me even though I enjoy reading unconventional or even toxic dynamics.
