In the interview the writer even said if she could rewrite the book she would simply erase Yandan's relationship with Yingyuan so the story will be more focused on Yandan and Yumo

The male lead has always been Yumo, the writer mentioned in an interview that the whole point of the story is to remind ppl that instead of being stuck in the past, we should pay more attention on the person who's actually around you. Even the book title "Chen Xiang Ru Xie" , which literally means Agarwood Like ashes, is a analogy to Yandan's failed relationship with Yingyuan. It shows up in the book when Yandan explains to Yingyuan why they're not getting back together. Yandan said once Agarwood burned into ashes, there's no way you can pick them up again, just like their past relationship, it's over. In the meantime Yumo has always been the one who got her back and supported her unconditionally. In the end Yandan could have the chance to go back to heaven and become a deity again but she chose to stay in the mortal world with Yumo.

I didn't get that part. Would you mind explaining?
Parents in rural areas prefer to give nicknames like Gou Dan to their children in the hope that they are as easy to be fostered as dogs, also they believe a vulgar nickname can keep their child from unfortunate. However there's no way Yingyuan, a elegant and proud god, will want his son to be called dog

so the story would have changed completely if they would have got divorced. did she work in Fangyuan Law Firm?…
Yeah she did, she was supposed to fight for her son's custody just like other things she fought for

Title The Story of Xing Fu Spoiler
Kindly reminder to ppl who don't like the ending, the scriptwriter has posted the original storyline online after the ending is aired, where Xingfu did stay in the city and divorced her husband. She was forced to change it due to censorship :) China needs newborn babies so bad now that there's no way they will approve of a tv show that encourages women to divorce their husbands lol Instead women should always devote themselves to the family and have more kids with their husbands no matter how toxic they are. This is SICK

Title The Story of Xing Fu Spoiler

it's just really unusual to go to college after your early 20s, people would judge you like "you should be working instead of going to school at this age", but technically you could. I think he's more referring to the fact the school won't recover her spot, in the real case the victim couldn't go to the original school either, she had to take exam and go to another one. But still, going to college late isn't really a common thing in china so they probably never thought it would work .

They don’t need to live with him. They have their own home. Also a lot of marriage fails because of in-laws.…
I'll have been against this marriage too if I were her mom, too many red flags and she's just too young and naive to see them. I can see Qingzhi uses her money to help his family consistently in the future and his parents will never leave them alone. They will force Yani to have kids as soon as they get married and stay home for the kids just like Xingfu. And Qingzhi is just as crowded as his parents he won't have the guts to be against them. So sad she can't see these red flags

Honestly to most Chinese parents having kids is just pure investment lol if u can't give them grandchildren or take care of them when they get old they will disown you in a heartbeat. Qingzhi milks the whole family but he's also the one with most pressure. He has to be successful and carry the whole family otherwise his parents investment will be failure. He can never live his own life without considering his family and he also can't cut them off his life. Everyone in this family is suffering

Qingzhi is being called ungrateful for not wanting his parents living with him already... and tbh this is already a ideal situation, I know a lot of parents have to sell their own house to afford their sons one. If their son doesn't want to live with them they would have nowhere to live and most city girls don't want to live with inlaws especially inlaws from countryside. The husband either fail his parents or his wife, which is why many parents in the city don't want their daughters marry into such family

only the public ones, I know some cities have changed to inclde the rental ones but most place don't. it's also against the tradition to get married without owning a house so. But I agree this kind of patriarchy shit needs to be changed, women in the courtyside like Xiuyu and Xingfu are born to be milked instead of living their own life

renting is not a option lol, to older generations renting a house isn't really owning a house and you can't start a family like that. you will be looked down of if you live in a rental house after marriage and again, the kids still won't be able to go to school. You need to acutally own a house to go to the public school in your neighood, otherwise your kids will have to go to super expensive private school. In China most of the public school is better than private ones so the houses near school are ususlly the most expensive as well. And the "the whole family helps the only successful son" is also pretty common in the countryside, parents can't afford the success of all the children so they will make sure at least one (mostly son) is successful even it will need the whole family to provide for them. Xiuyu is already the lucky one, I know some parents will literally sell their daughters to other families for the dowry, which eventually will be used to provide for their brothers. As part of family members it's just Xingfu's duty to help her brother-in-law, if she said no she will be called ungrateful and heartless, that's a lot of moral pressure. I know it's fucked up but sadly that's just the reality.

and it's also impossible to get married without buying a house cause that means your kids won't be able to go to school, and traditionally the parents also won't allow their daughter to marry someone without a house since house is just a must have to start a family to them

House price in China is ridiculously expensive, especially in the city. there's a saying that buying a house would empty 6 pockets, which includs the couple's parents and grandpaernts from each sides, and that's just the down payment. There's no way a new grad with a few years of saving could afford that, no matter how much he made.
