As someone who knows many people who have stayed in toxic relationships, I can vouch that in the real world people do and will stay in horrible relationships for a multitude of complex reasons. I think it made sense to end it where it did. It was a relatively short and sweet show and told the story in the way it needed to. "Youth" is a long chapter in our lives that won't end for these characters for a while, and I viewed this a short window of time into the part where they grow more comfortable with who they are and find First Love.
