They did not deny the stalking point. But we can't deny the fact that he did not approach her best friend in the entire process. How could he approach her when he doesn't yet understand if it was safe. What if he risks and she knows that something happened to him and feels guilty about it for the rest of her life. It's not romanticizing the stalker. And he did leave all the clues stating that he liked her and the resultant injuries he faced. He left an open option to search for him if she liked him. So I don't think it's forced. But the proposing scene was a little off though.
