I think people are confusing kdrama with documentary. Of course it only scratched the surface, and it's already gutwrenching enough. The Glory is very similar - it also used 3 real-life bullying situations in the main character's story, but the real life stories are so much worse. But it is fiction and it is created as entertainment, not education.

Not sure if people realize documentaries do exist, if you want to dive below the "surface" of a kdrama you can. This was not created to be more than a glimpse into the military culture and they did an amazing job. I think people who see DP and want to learn more will find that there are plenty of resources out there that are meant to inform and educate, not entertain.

I'm afraid so. And with military service being mandatory, this insidious military culture is a very likely culprit in the domestic violence problem (along with other cultural views towards women.) You first suffer abuse, then you are forced to abuse others... It creates a vicious cycle. Obviously not everyone is equal and some will experience far worse bullying than others, and having wealth and status can protect you from this military experience (or sometimes get you exemption from mandatory military service altogether though they are supposedly cracking down on chaebols wiggling out of service.) But I don't think the majority complete service without some kind of trauma... Whether from something done to them or something they did to another. It's just a rough experience and not everyone is cut out for it, I know SK is working towards reform but change is very slow.

Much like The Glory, this show may be fiction but it bases things on true stories... And if you read about the real stories, they're even worse 😢

Could be worse - North Korea has way longer mandatory military service and like everything that side of the DMZ it's a complete nightmare.

Oh Jung-se is one of my favorite actors. I've loved him since I saw him play Moon Sang-tae 💜

Happens a lot in kdrama - ML or FL do all the actual investigative work and catch the criminal(s) and the actual cops are mostly decorative 😆

True, but if you've already binged all the good ones, this is pretty entertaining... and at least it has Lee Min-ki 😁 Black Out was so good, I love Ko Bo-gyeol. Connection and When the Phone Rings were both decent too. Man come to think of it there were a LOT this year.

This is too true. Like plot holes and inconsistencies are a huge deal to me; I envy people who don't notice or mind them. It's just OCD ruining a simple pleasure. I saw a post on Reddit saying 12 Monkeys was amazing and they did a good job avoiding plot holes with time travel, so I watched the whole LONG series. I have literally never seen anything with so many plot holes and nonsense, I felt like bashing my head against the wall 😭

Sometimes I feel like the positive reviewers saw a whole different show. 😆 We definitely all have different standards, and if you value different qualities than the majority, the overall ratings mean very little to you.

I thought I was the only one who liked that! If the romance is a subplot I personally prefer when it only comes into fruition at the end and isn't competing with the main storyline. Especially when it's a crime drama. Please figure out the whole "murderer on the loose" business before you worry about your love life lol

I feel a sense of great injustice when I see some of the ratings on here. ,(Crash Landing on You was NOT better than It's Okay to Not be Okay, I'll die a bloody death on that hill! ⚔️)

A lot of my faves get lukewarm ratings, it's the same here as on MAL. Ratings are not as useful as reviews. The trick I've learned over the years is to look for reviews that say things are "underrated" or "hidden gems," I find I tend to enjoy them.

And sometimes people ratio dramas to hell for silly reasons so reviews help there too.

Those are really good examples (though you reminded me of the tragic cancellation of Juvenile Justice 😭) I've watched too much kdrama to really be bothered by predictability. It's all about the journey, not the destination. I've personally suffered injustice in my life and I get a lot of satisfaction from seeing people get happier endings than I did, both in fiction and reality!

We also share a love for Lee Min-ki! 💜 I will watch a drama just for him... Wouldn't be the first time! 🤣

So I'm not the only one who speeds shows up? 😆 It's absurd to criticize any actor for pretty privilege. It's like criticizing a basketball player for being too tall. It's not the only thing that matters but it's always been important. Yes, sometimes more talented people lose roles to more attractive people and that sucks but it's not any secret and people know this going into an acting career.

For me Cha Eun Woo's greatest weapon is his smile, very disarmingly sweet and dazzling. Lots of pretty boys in kdrama but they have to be talented and always improving, and I feel he is. You may get one undeserved role through pretty privilege but if you can't keep up with the incredible competition in South Korea, you will not continue to get cast.

Everyone's gotta judge, it's giving envy 🤷🏻‍♀️ just imo
