Just a brief follow up to this; finished the series today. Absolutely incredible. Harrowing, totally absorbing and compelling, the entire way through. Exhausting, disturbing, moving, emotionally powerful, it really achieves everything it sets out to be in damn near perfect fashion. So glad there is finally a truly excellent piece of cinema (or TV drama) covering this subject. It is everything that others before should have been, and more. Anyone interested in Chinese WWII history and dramas/films should absolutely see this.

Saw some people talking about the auto-translated subs on the YouTube page, wanted to mention this for anyone looking to watch the series. I am 4 episodes in and English subs are perfect.
Also, I wanted to say I am VERY impressed with the series itself so far. Very well made, well acted and well-written, with superb atmosphere and presentation. Sounds like most people who watched it all continue to have a lot of praise, and I am really grateful to finally have a very good, respectful, thoughtful and serious work put to the screen on this subject. I think it's a hard topic to handle and that other attempts like the 731 film from earlier last year or the old Men Behind the Sun movies have struggled to reach the balance between shying away from the real horror of the situation, or alternatively becoming exploitative and trashy. This drama so far really seems to strike the balance and is incredibly compelling so far.

Was trying to get into this one really hard, was excited to see it got English subs, but after the first couple episodes while I started out pretty enthusiastic, it started really wearing me out eventually. I can't help but feel like all the comedy is very forced and that in an attempt to make the characters seem comical a lot of them really just come off as stupid or very mean-spirited, and not at all likeable. It feels like a story that should have been told more "straight" but was forced into being comedic and so the gravity of the situation doesn't at all fit the tone. In a lot of places it drags out scenes just to force in a drawn out argument or problem for the sake of pretty dull humor. Very nicely shot and technically a good looking show, but I feel like the comedy angle sabotages it overall.
Watched the first couple episodes last night. Seems good so far! Very good production values, good battle scenes and effects and cinematography. Doesn't have that kinda extremely heavy-handed patriotic dialogue some of these dramas fall victim to or anything so far, either. Definitely seems worth a go if you are looking for a new Chinese war/historical drama.

I realize this reply is very late, but if you are still waiting, then go to China Zone on YouTube through the "Where to Watch" section, turn on the Chinese captions in the settings on the YouTube upload, and then go to the auto-translate option in the caption settings and translate it to English or whichever your desired choice is. The auto-translate works surprisingly well! I've used it for a few other dramas as well.
Really enjoying this one so far, up to episode 7. Only wish that the English subbed upload on Huashi.tv's Youtube didn't have so many audio glitches. They've been really bad the last few episodes, just hoping its not that way the whole way through. I don't really mind janky subtitles, used to taking what I can get for obscure dramas, but the audio cutting in and out gets frustrating.
