I think the police can tell because its their job(to check the players) and choice(to reveal their or other's idenity). and that's what I told that "how can I trust you" is there, therefore doing friends group don't matter. but if someone's idenity is revealed, shouldn't they trust that ? otherwise how will they play the game. you have to trust the police( here, she already proved her identity) and it does happen that someone else takes your identity, but wouldn't that prove you(the real one) that the copycat is a mafia ? the real game takes place when the discussion time starts. so other than finding who's the mafia, players need to present their suspection and their reason behind it. mafia may try to frame you too, but you need to have a way to defend yourself. therefore discussion is very important in mafia game.
