The most important one...keeping same actress for fang fie and jiang li character. Fang fie dies and her soul enters jian lis body. This was the core point. Ji heng who is master of studying ppl got drawn to jiang li coz he was unable to figure out her motive in the beginning.
But in drama wen u make fang fie literally replace dead jiang li even an idiot can figure it out abt her identity. Fang fie was the no 1 beauty of her generation even ji heng had seen her so where do even work out the mystery part of fang fie second chance at life.. this is just one example

I had just read the book before this series came out.. Finally i understood why the present chinese series suck so much. They freaking ruin the core plot for some stupid reasons which destroys the whole dynamic between the characters.. they have such brilliant cast but they ruined it (for me).. through out the series everything got messed up beyond reason.
Drama only watchers will get so confused through out the series due to its crappy script.. all the hype moment u could expect from the book got butchered so bad to the extent that its sucked the soul out of this drama..

I'm shocked to see some in comments comparing Runyu with that ra**st emperor amd that vile bird queen.. like seriously? Runyu did turn dark but can u balme him? If the things he faced happened to anyone else they would have gone bonkers.. wasn't Xufeng also hell bent on taking revenge on jinmi when he came back as demon lord? He was ready to marry another until he found out the real truth abt what jinmi did for him.. Its human nature to be bitter, Xufeng had genuine feelings towards jinmi yet that didn't stop him from hurting her wen she betrayed him and u expect runyu to be forgiving towards that monster of emperor - queen couple? I was cheering wen they got what they deserved at the had of runyu, noone else had the spine to do the right thing coz they were all hypocrites. The only person Runyu did wrong or betrayed was jinmi, Runyu only owes apology to jinmi not anyone else.. thats the only mistake he has done in his life where he let his obsession over her turn him into a dark person that he wasn't.. Runyu is a grey character who is nothing like those downright evil characters (the emperor and the bird queen).
Definitely comes under" one of the most overrated dramas " the story is meh with a poor world building with little character development. The strongest point of this drama are the leads. They are really good actors so this drama basically rode on their fame.. as a series it did nothing to improve the actors skills nor did it elivate any segments of the plot. Its an average one time watch series 7/10
Why the rating is so low? This is one of those rare historical drama which is realistically done to the core. Majority of these genre will have illogical and senseless world building just to provide over the top cute moments b/w leads.. but in this drama the world building is so good that each and every character appear real like u are watching their live documentary. TSOML Easily deserves a 9 out of 10
