Tbh, I am not interested in her as a character, only as a couple with Zhao Quan.

The couple I reckon most people skip while watching, Lord Zhennan (Zhao Quan) and He Zhen.

I watched every scene and did not fast forward or skipped any scenes and have been trying to like them as a couple but failed at most time.
So it has nothing to do with not knowing the characters but the lack chemistry I get from them as a couple.

Zhao Quan was a good person, smart, loyal and kind. He avoided the court politic and preferred to help CXZ instead, including restraining the unrestrained CXZ from being too daring and going against the court.
He can be funny and unserious but he can also be serious and firmed. He dared to cancel his marriage with a princess.

He Zhen was supposed to be a smart good person, but in the last episodes, has turned into a not so kind woman.
Lord Zhennan did not have to marry her at all but did so for her honour but she left without leaving him a note and embarrassed his whole noble family?
That is what I call an ungrateful woman, not LMT.

I suppose she is more suitable as the empress dowager, being cold and ruthless

As for Lord Zhennan. I do not think He Zhen deserves such a great man.

Since I did not ff any scenes, I am also following Lord Zhennan & HeZhen's love story. Well... Supposedly a love story since like you said, lack chemistry.

And her character...
She was not a kind person she was shown at the beginning.
Lord Zhennan was way above her station but because they spent the night together, he was willing to marry her, even though he was not really in love with her at that time. His feeling has grown for her yes, but not to the point of removing the freedom he liked so much for her.
Yes, she did not have to marry him but she could at least talk to him and be nicer. He did not owe her anything. He tricked her to distract her from her broken heart.
He Zhen was the ungrateful character in the story, not LMT.

Her father thought that Xueji became the empress all because of him, because he chose her from all of his daughters. He did, but he initially chose her because she was easily sacrificed, as the concubine's daughter, to a bandit leader.
So her father thought that he could arrange for his other daughter to join the inner court thus replacing her.

Minister Shi forgot that Ziyu chose her too from the start and then as his empress. Ziyu clicked with her from right away but he did not realise it due to his past engagement. And he will protect her from her darn awful father and family.
Xueji maybe an empress but she has no connection to support her and now is severing ties with her greedy family.
Without Ziyu, she would have no power at all.

I loved how Ziyu+Story started, that is why I paid attention to them.
To Lord Zhennan & He Zhen too, but with less attention.

LMT reaction feels like an idol listening to her fanboy ranting, as in, he was supposed to do that and I did not have to respond to that

Ziyu and Xueji have always been interesting to watch. Love did not make her a fool and power did not change her character, the warm and kind person.
Her maids adore her and even Ziyu's eunuch Fu likes her.

And this couple can be a way out for those who are so tired with the dragging scene.

Episode 30 is entertaining but there is something missing.
CXZ whole confession that was supposed to be heartfelt and made my heart fluttered, has become a comedy now, with the dragging scene.
And LMT, who should have felt overwhelmed with his words, feels more like a teen hearing her crush pouring his heart.
I think CXZ part is poor writing.
Not sure about LMT. Bad script writing or interpretation? 🤔

Ziyu always knew that Prince Sui was a bad person who only supported him because he did not have a claim on the throne but Ziyu was the heir, so Prince Sui wanted to use his nephew as the puppet emperor. But Ziyu is a good person and to have a prosper empire, he needs to eliminate the corrupted officials, including his uncle.

Somehow I think Ziyu knew, even without an obvious red mark. He paid attention to her being and reaction, without knowing that it was part of affection too.
Xueji accepted that slap and ill treatment from her family but she also did not let them get the power they wanted.

He wanted her to be safe from the start. He used to be indifferent to others than LMT. He just needs to reciprocate her feelings soon.

Ziyu is indeed the true heir to the throne.
The crown prince (Ziyu's father) and the whole family were killed by the Wu, the empress dowager family. Ziyu had to run away and hid at Mount Yang for his safety before he could come back to claim his rights.
Too bad there is no clear info given on the whole coup or rebellion. Not the past nor when the Shi won against the Wu
The child emperor was the late emperor's son with the empress dowager.

No wonder WeTV viewers were rooting for her in tonight episode. Xueji radiates warm, comfort and love.

I have loved her character from the moment Xueji showed up.
Xueji was the kindest and warmest character in this drama. She grew up to be a good young lady who remained on the right way, despite receiving no love at the Shi Mansion.

For Xueji, Ziyu was the one who saved her from the cruel Shi family. She knew Ziyu did not love her so she did not embarrass him or herself by begging for his love or seeking attention.
Ziyu is falling for her, who understands him the most despite the short time they actually spend together. He just needs to totally let go of his past attachment and be happy with Xueji.
They need each other and can be the powerful emperor and empress together
