LMT was below his rank, and worse, a concubine of a bandit he was trying to capture. That matters not, since love is blind. CXZ was living a lie and he regretted it, and planned to tell the whole truth to her, while hoping that she would forgive him. He still loved and accepted her, even though the her now was not the same dolllike wife he first knew and fell for. He even loved her more now, the fierce LMT whom he thought as a man and considered a worthy opponent. LMT pierced him, said all the hurtful break up words, humiliated him and broke his heart even more by staying with ZY but CXZ heart remained the same. He would do everything to get her back.
LMT had her heart crushed twice. She probably did not love ZY like she did CXZ but she admired him, so his betrayal hurt her and made her leave him right away. LMT was tough outside but a softie inside (quoted: uncle). CXZ hurt her the second time. Since she loved him so much, his betrayal hurt deeper and even still in love with him, LMT left, severing the love and pain from her life in the most cruel way. LMT continued treating CXZ badly, hoping that while she was unable to forget that love, he would.
CXZ is persistent. LMT is in denial and traumatised in love. Remember that she is also a softie, so their love will prevail. It just needs CXZ to continue be 'shameless' and keeps pursuing her.
She is a good person. ZY totally does not deserve her but we can see in teaser that they may end up loving each…
