In real life someone so abused needs a fair amount of distance to be able to get out from.knder their dominance and realize maybe they aren't as all-powerful. The ending is perfectly realistic. The problem is you want and ideal result that is unlikely.

I think a lot of younger people are used to a Hollywood or Disney approach where every point is hammered home with no subtlety and no ambiguity and struggle to accept the quiet implications of a much more realistic story. The story is about being young, powerless, misunderstood and alone while still trying to do what is best for each other. And it is about getting a second chance when the moment is right and you are no longer a slave to others. Their secret love story is very tender and sincere and their mutual sacrifices realistic. When you are young and idealistic you do that sort of stuff. It is also about meeting each other when the time is right. And the second couple is also very cute and thoughtful.

It isn't necessary. They both know they did it for each other. It skips the angsty in between years and tells you that when two people are separated by situations beyond themselves and their connection was genuine from the start they can start over freer and happier.
