I don't know if you watch the uncut version or the compressed summary in YouTube because a lot of your complains that you think is "lacking" are answered in the series.
Questions like "Who is Jom? Who is Yai?" Those things are clearly shown and answered in the show, I'm not sure if we are watching the same show or if you even paid any attention to the show at all. If you are wondering if Jom wants to go back to present, yes he does, it was clear as the sun in the first few episodes, but because of Yai he already has doubts in leaving this era. Yai is someone who is trapped with his family's obligation, in Episode 9 where he confronts his father, it was also clear that he did everything his father wants even to the point of sacrificing his own happiness including his plans to go to France. His relationship with his family was also clearly shown. I don't understand why you are so blind to see those things. Are you the kind of viewer that needs to spoon feed everything?
"The relationship of the two protagonists is based on little or nothing" I doubt it. It was established in in Episode 2-4 how Jom and Yai fell in love and how these 2 lonely people found happiness towards each other. Again, have you really tried to watch and analyze the story?
