Title The First Jasmine Spoiler
A drama that rewards patience and stays with you long after it ends

I went into The First Jasmine expecting another beautifully produced historical romance. What I didn’t expect was one of the most layered historical dramas I’ve watched in recent years.

This is not a drama where everything is laid out neatly for the audience. In fact, during the first half, I found myself constantly asking questions. Why is Ye Li behaving this way? Who can actually be trusted? What really happened at Lishan? At times, I even wondered if certain scenes made sense.

Then, little by little, the answers came.

What impressed me most wasn’t that every mystery had a shocking twist—it was that the drama trusted its audience to be patient. Characters who initially seemed inconsistent suddenly became understandable. Conversations I barely paid attention to early on carried completely different meanings when viewed in hindsight. It’s one of those rare dramas where looking back is just as rewarding as watching it unfold.

The acting deserves equal praise. Bai Lu gives one of the strongest performances of her career. Ye Li isn’t written as an invincible heroine; she’s intelligent yet deeply scarred, calm yet haunted by grief. Bai Lu captures those contradictions beautifully without overacting.

Cheng Lei is equally compelling as Mo Xiuyao. Rather than portraying another stereotypical cold prince, he creates a character whose strength comes from quiet confidence, intelligence, and unwavering trust in Ye Li. Their relationship is one of the drama’s greatest strengths because it is built on mutual respect, not misunderstandings or endless romantic clichés.

Visually, the drama is stunning. Every frame feels carefully composed, from the palace halls to the battlefields. The cinematography never distracts from the story—it enhances it.

Many people compare this drama with Pursuit of Jade, and I enjoyed that series immensely. Pursuit of Jade is an excellent historical romance with engaging characters and a satisfying emotional journey. However, The First Jasmine left a much deeper impression on me.

If Pursuit of Jade is a story that wears its heart on its sleeve, The First Jasmine is a story that slowly reveals its soul. It is heavier, more political, more psychologically layered, and certainly not a “what you see is what you get” drama. It asks you to pay attention, question your assumptions, and trust that the pieces will eventually come together.

It may not be the easiest drama to watch, but for me, it was the more rewarding one.

When the final episode ended, I realised I wasn’t thinking about the romance first—I was thinking about the people, the sacrifices, the choices they made, and how every layer of the story had been built with purpose.

That is why this is a rare for me, and one I would recommend without hesitation to anyone looking for more than just another historical idol drama.

Agreed with your point regarding "wind down". But the problem is, this drama gave people more stress, forget about…
no worries. no offence taken. everyone is allowed to have their own likes and dislike. my cup of tea may not be yours but that doesn’t make us enemies. peace ✌️

To each their own, this drama is fantastic! Why watch a drama? For me is to wind down from a day’s hard work and stress. I find this one relaxing and funny. I know is a drama so I don’t get too soaked up with their temporary breakup which some find frustrating. Just watch and enjoy the pretty actors and actresses in it. Most scenes are good and if you don’t like any, just skip it. Overall, I do not need to think much with this and I totally enjoyed myself finishing it.
