Rewatching Kunning Palace with my mum was super interesting because she is a native chinese speaker, whereas mine is quite mediocre, so of course she has a deeper understanding than I do. So btw if you didn't know the Shu in Xue Shu's name (consort xian) means 'to lose' which is pretty hilarious. The Wei in Xie Wei means 'dangerous' whereas Ju'an means 'safe'. My mum thought it was super interesting that the two names he chose for himself have opposite meanings. I feel that it really shows his internal struggle. He's got this dark thirst for revenge and is willing to go low to achieve it, but he's also an intelligent scholar with a strong sense of justice and morals.
I find it so funny how the ML is being harsh with the FL so that she can become more talented and smart but canβt…
Couldn't agree more! I love this! He won't let anyone criticise her, he has such a high opinion of her in spite of her flaws, and I find it so sweet :)
I had an interesting thought about Kunning Palace the other day that I'd like to share. So when I first saw the…
Firstly, as we know, when Xie Wei was around seven years old he was forced to surrender to Pingnan Wang as the crown prince. He had to stay in the courtyard with the dead boys in the snow until his father came to invade the city and he was exposed, Pingnan was driven away... we know the rest. However I suspect that Xie Wei's experience during this time is probably much worse than what they show during the drama. Naturally, the Duke of Xue did not come to save the city, the very next day, there's at least a couple of weeks gap here. After realising that I felt so bad for Xie Wei, because just imagine a seven year old spending weeks with rotting corpses of other boys his age, probably sleeping there, and eating snow to survive.
Secondly, during his crazy snow episode on the way to the capital, (though this was never mentioned in the drama) I think that this was the first time that ever happened. At some point Jiang Xue NIng mentions that Jinling, (where Xie Wei spent his life with Pingnan Wang) is in the South and that snow is impossible there. Therefore it's likely that the trip to the capital with her is actually the first time he saw snow since that particular day.
I looooove Kunning Palace so much, and there was so much interesting material they could have expanded on more. This is just me wishing for 100+ episodes lol.

So when I first saw the scene when Xie Wei went crazy on his journey to the capital with Jiang Xue Ning I though it was a little bit cringe. But after thinking about it more, I started to understand it better.
Overall ranking dropped π it was at top among all c series with 8.8.
I agree that the ranking should be higher, there are so many highly ranked K dramas mostly as they have a bigger international audience (that's not to say I don't love K dramas, I do really love them too) but I do also feel that C dramas are consistently lower ranked for no reason. Like I know its my own opinion but why is Kunning Palace lower than weight lifting fairy kim bok joo π I loved them both, bot come onnnn π
Do you think she will like LLTG?That's my current rewatch run.
My Mum has seen LLTG! She really enjoyed the first sort of 25 eps and lost interest a bit after unfortunately, some times I rewatch the best parts, the main couple is truly adorable :) She is really really picky though ππ₯°
Everyone I rewatched with my mum over the Christmas holidays, and we are currently on episode 36. (I had to totally pretend like I hadn't watched it before lol). My mum is chinese born and raised and is super snobbish when it comes to dramas, she pretty much only likes 'Dream of Red Chamber' (Hong Lou Meng) and TMoPB and Minglan so it's really hard to impress her because she keeps watching old stuff. However she cried so hard in these scene where Xie Wei stabbed his hand! I was so touched ππ₯°π₯°π₯°
Oooooo don't worry, keep watching π there are smart villains ahead!
I would suggest the rebel Princess! Itβs also got similarities to Kunning Palace. - There are multiple love interests over the flβs lifetime - The ML and fl scheme together against their enemies The ML and fl are capable for doing bad things but are ultimately good people. It also has a high production value. Honestly people mainly complain about the age of Zhang Ziyi in the rebel Princess and yes she doesnβt look 16, in my head sheβs more like 22, I just age the characters up a bit in my head.
