On When the Stars Gossip Jan 13, 2025
This comment about the main character will be long and somewhat repetitive, but I wrote it with sincerity. If you read it to the end, thank you very much. Gong Ryong is a spontaneous character and, although it may not seem so, he is naively honest, but it cannot be summed up only in that. He is someone who is fearless and makes many mistakes despite wanting to do good, a character who acts before thinking. He doesn't measure the consequences and he hurts himself physically and emotionally, for example he agrees to be with Go Eun at a very bad time for him and he said yes by instinct but he really didn't know the real reason (it was the first of many moments in the future where he began to feel a conflict with his mind because before everything was just doing a good job and being celebrated as a good doctor) but as he wants to be sincere he never says that he loves her and rather says that he wanted to be faithful to her since according to him it was the only thing he could fulfill (supposedly he couldn't fall in love and she was the closest thing to that), he wants to be sincere but those internal conflicts were kept in his mind and he didnt want to care about it but now he really feels something like love for the first time, he wants to express it sincerely, but as i said he is a character guided by his instincts (he doesn't usually analyze things much), so even if he didnt want to he will hurt her girlfriend , a person who helps him a lot even if it is not true love (despite the fact that it is seen in the preview that he wants to end the engagement with Choi Go Eun, acting before thinking made the order not be correct way since he confessed first to the commander, even interrupting her privacy, and we could blame it on the alcohol, but he can't control himself, he says things he shouldnt and act recklessly,  if he sees anyone in trouble he goes and helps them no matter what, if he is given a task, he has to do it until the end even if it damages his muscles and causes a false alarm, and if he really feels something he has to say it, he doesn't comply with social norms and he himself said before: "I was never one to obey my mothers." He is a very contradictory character and that desire to help desperately is something that also ironically condemns him. It is for this reason (and many others) that for the general public, he is not pleasant and does not work as an exemplary protagonist since he does not meet the characteristics that society dictates for a professional like a doctor and is not completely moral, so many would say he is not a good person. The drama also portrays this character as a comedic resource, in an effort to show that somehow he doesn't belong in the right place. Can a guy like him grow, like plants, in a place where no one takes him seriously? "I want to be sincere but no one cares," "congratulate me, I did something right, I saved you," "I don't want to disappoint you," "I want you to like me," "say I did well," "I want to know if it was worth it," "I want to believe I can achieve something and not leave here empty-handed," "I'm very good," "I'm bad," "I have to make it," "I'm the worst," "I'm good for nothing," "if I do it sincerely, I'm doing it right." I feel that's how Gong Ryong thinks; his head is full of conflicts, but superficially, he just looks like a rookie who messes things up. And it's strange because he's a doctor. Why behave like an idiot? But this guy seems to have no mask, the mask that we all wear in society which makes us behave correctly the moment we step out of our houses, which makes us think twice before acting, we are not the same with everyone. But many say that his "exaggerated" comedic character is not enough since not everyone finds it funny to see a "marginal" who has no shame in doing silly things to achieve his goal, which now seems to no longer make sense because someone better dit it before him. Everyone looked at him with disbelief, even if he was a doctor, because he was a guy that rumors said only took advantage of his fiancée's money (which is true, but Gong Ryong wants to believe otherwise, and that's why he promised to be with her until the end. However, his lack of connection with social norms makes him always do things he shouldn't). Even though he believes he is doing good and being sincere, that is not enough for people to appreciate him. He is a character who, if you notice, needs validation from others. He wants to leave a mark and be the best at what he does, to prove that he is worth it. But after his dismissal, he lived being belittled, which is why he needs to show that he can help others. However, this only makes him look like a desperate madman. However, even though most of the audience criticizes him and has solid arguments for not liking him, for me, it is more interesting to analyze Gong Ryong than the characters that are made to please everyone, who even seem more unrealistic than an over-the-top performance. Maybe this drama wants to prove if such an ambiguous and gray character can eventually please people. If you notice, we might be seeing once again a twisted hero's journey, with an unconventional character with a ridiculous and questionable goal for many, but with an unbreakable conviction, even though many might call it a whim. Lmh said that the drama was also about a group of good people coming together to do good things, and of course, on the surface, that's what it is since despite their backgrounds, they all strive to help humanity. But is being a good person just that? Gong Ryong is a guy who is driven by his feelings and emotions of the moment; however, for me, he is not a pure and completely good person, and I like to analyze that because it is truly human. What I mean is that his flaws are more noticeable than his virtues, which will gradually come into sharper focus.
For now, he is an intruder, a person who is on trial (like in limbo) and many times he doesn't know why he ends up doing what he does, he always does reckless things, he is a fool who for a long time believed he was only driven by doing good and bringing life to the world, leaving many things aside, becoming completely naive. There were only 4 chapters, but you can see that he went through a lot. He remembers everything from the womb, but that doesn't mean he knows everything. In fact, he only knows how to study, protect his 3 moms, and has a sense of responsibility towards life. But because of that, he believes he can be a hero, saving everyone regardless of the cost. However, if we are realistic, you can't save everyone even if you want to (you have to learn to let go). Being an "outsider," even though he wasn't aware of it, made him miss out on many experiences. Working all day without rest and then becoming unemployed and turning to alcohol made him give up for a time. Really, what was his purpose if he couldn't bring life? He had no direction, wanted revenge, and was driven by obligation.  But that spark of wanting to help returned in the least expected place (space), and he really wants to do something meaningful, even if he looks like a lunatic trying to fulfill a whim. Because for him, being sincere and fulfilling his purpose is what matters. It's also a place where he will fall in love for the first time, even though he shouldn't. It seems that, as always, his feelings win, and he acts before thinking. Ironically, and although it sounds strange, he is honest because he doesn't think things through, he just acts like luffy from one piece , who is described as selfish by his own crew, he is a good guy , his heart is good but he never stop to think making sometimes things worse (I don't know if you understand what I'm getting at).Space serves to feel insignificant, and to think that maybe we are worth nothing and at the same time worth everything. Really, a gray character with a lot of contrast, with a lot of experience but at the same time none, with a lot of determination but without preparation, truly a caricatured human, it can even reach the ridiculous, but I like seeing a character like this, and everything I say is not being negative, but rather I am someone who looks at this character with great interest in knowing how he will evolve. It's easier to empathize with characters we get to know slowly and with whom we can experience that feeling of wanting to be someone, but here we start with a quick flashback where we see his ups and downs. Maybe if the story had been about Gong Ryong on Earth becoming a doctor and filmed in a conventional way with dialogues more aligned with reality, people would have supported him more. But this story is written, directed, and edited in an unconventional way, being unrealistic and featuring an extravagant male protagonist: someone who wants to be good but even he, in the first episode, said something like: maybe it's okay for me to die, I haven't done good things, I thought the universe was for living but we only came to die. I believe that even if I didn't like LMH or his acting, I would still find his character and journey interesting to analyze. When you see Gong Ryong, you ask yourself, "Why does he do that?" Why do you act like that? Why don't you think before you act? And I think it's the same thing we've all gone through and asked, "why did we do that? "The main character is not appealing to most and maybe never will be (no matter what the actors say), but I think having this fish out of water is a metaphor for how we often feel at some point in our lives. If it had been filmed differently, maybe everyone would have empathized, and perhaps the fact that everything has to be correct and pleasant makes us not want to see something different and strange, but I believe in free expression and feel that lmh and the other producers should not regret producing this.

I understand your point, luckily I like crazy comedy hehe although I'm a doctor and I'm supposed to like more…
I also don't like it when people defend their arguments with very disrespectful comments, I didn't want you to have a bad experience here (to be honest im new here but because ive been a one piece fan for a long time i know how this fan wars goes and i never like them) so you have my support and I respect your opinion. For my part, I still like the series, I'm having a good time, in fact if you look at the trailers they already gave us to understand that there was going to be a lot of comedy and unrealistic things but even so there will be a lot of talk about life and as someone who loves comedy and philosophy I will stay. Hope you find a series you will enjoy :)

For me first ep felt like 5 min, you have to go and watch something else. It was an amazing first ep.
I’m sorry to hear that, definitely don’t force yourself to watch it just because there are people who disagree with you, your opinion is respected. In my case I was afraid that I wouldn’t like it but luckily I had a good time and I think it’s because I like crazy things hehe, sometimes I remembered Scrubs and Scott Pilgrim at one point hehe, but unlike the American ones, I’ve noticed that Asian productions, whether dramas or anime, tend to combine a lot of serious and comedic things, so that particular change of tone didn’t seem strange to me, maybe it’s because things happen so fast and in an unconventional way one can feel bewildered? but as I said in my case the opposite happened, I think the fast pace was well achieved, obviously there are things that are unreal but the goal of the series was never to be completely real and faithful, rather it was to make a space office drama (see astronauts doing their research), have complicated love relationships and the most important thing for the protagonists is that they reflect on life. Anyway, thank you for giving your honest opinion. I don't think this series will be very popular since it doesn't meet the expectations of all viewers, but at least for me it has managed to have an identity. Greetings.

Sad to say, 22 minutes into the first ep I got bored out of my mind and decided to just browse some news sites…
I understand your point, luckily I like crazy comedy hehe although I'm a doctor and I'm supposed to like more serious stuff (I watched a lot of weird anime and I like movies like Scott Pilgrim, Tim Burton, etc), I also really liked the old episodes of twilight zone, however lately I was starting to get interested in more serious stuff like Clint Eastwood movies, even lee min ho's pachinko but this first episode didn't disappoint me (I thought it would since my tastes were changing and I preferred more thoughtful things) but it was crazy, it wasn't completely realistic but I had a good time and the main character isn't perfect nor does he pretend to be, I feel like he'll be a headache for everyone at the space station hehe. Anyway, I know there are fans who react badly and instead of giving a their opinion in a polite way they just criticize in very bad way, I think we have to respect everyone's tastes as well as everyone's point of view.

I liked the first chapter (although it has a fast pacing I think they handled it well and it was entertaining), there were crazy parts like the one in the pool but it reminded me of Jay D from Scrubs when he had those kind of weird dreams and a bit of Scott Pilgrim hehe but I know that some people were expecting something more serious because they are in space, but the truth is that if they had seen the trailers and read the premise maybe people would have been able to digest the story better since it was noticeable that they prioritize comedy and they mentioned that it was not going to be Hollywood style however they promise moments of reflection on life and I think that our 2 protagonists are interesting since they are not perfect at all. I am used to seeing this kind of crazy things with touches of moving scenes so I like it and I think Lee Min Ho has done a good job. The CGI was good, it was not perfect but not bad either, however, inside the station you can see the inversion. I feel like this kdrama won't be very popular and many people won't end up liking it because it might not meet their expectations, but I think that despite some tropes, it has an identity and I value that a lot.

We don't know Dinosaur's financial status yet. But he surely is rich in mother's love this time. He always get…
Not always, he had a big bond with his mom in mackerel run, personal taste, the heirs and when he met again his mother in lotbs and city hunter

he seems poor here , but lets see what happens
In this case he grew up poor since he was adopted by 3 ladies who are not rich and only have a small business but he became a doctor and of course doctors are not poor but it seems that he wants more money (as seen in the last trailer there are rumors about him and his ambition since he would do anything for money), but what is the real reason behind all these rumors? We'll have to watch to find out.

he only played the "richest guy" in two (highschool) dramas.....
In Lotb's case, he did not use his father's money, he left home when he was a teenager, so for a moment he was alone and poor until he met his friend and his new father figure, who taught him how to be a scammer They eventually got a lot of money because they only scam the rich, but the police were always looking for Jong Jae and his friends, so he didn't exactly live a quiet life. At the end of the story he does not become CEO of his father's company, but rather ends up working for the government with a modest but honest salary.

Heo Nam Jun again LoL one drama ends another begins
Actually this was recorded before "when the phone rings" (2022-2023)but because of post production they delayed it. Han ji eun also has a new kdrama this month

lmaoo why is lee min ho always the richest guy😂😂🤣has this man ever played a poor ml??
He is not chaebol or anything like that here, in the premise they said he worked 25 hours a day which implies that he is a workaholic so he can have a better life for himself and his three mothers (yes he was adopted by 3 ladies who were friends of his mother and decided to raise him after she died in childbirth). Then he met his current girlfriend, who is a millionaire and for some reason his girlfriend's father (the CEO of the largest company in Korea) tells him to go on a secret mission and he pays for the trip. And yes, he has played poor person roles: mackererl run, public enemy returns, gangnam blues, pachinko (his past), and also characters who are neither rich nor poor like in secret campus, get up, i am sam, personal taste, faith , the legend of the blue sea (he was a con artist and did not use his father's money)

i have high hopes for this one , it is very unique concept and a very different setting, I hope they don't just…
I am also looking forward to it, I must clarify that it will not be a Hollywood style series like Interstellar or Alien, it is more about the daily life of astronauts with a touch of comedy and romance, it is a new perspective of seeing these professionals in not an heroic way but rather seeing them doing research to help humaity

Well, it is your opinion, it is respected, I believe that no matter how much we try to tell you our perspective, you will not change your opinion. For my part, I don't like to see the world in black or white, I don't confine myself to a single square, I like to see the whole picture and see different points of view, that's why when I watch a series I analyze the characters not in a judging way but rather trying to understand them. I know that now there are people who believe they are morally superior but personally I think that is a farce, we are all human beings full of defects and errors, trying to lie to yourself believing that you only want good is a fallacy. That does not mean that we do not yearn to be better, of course we do and that is what we must do, but we aalso have to recognize our defects, and understand that bad things outside and inside us will never disappear, we must be patient and understand ourselves and understand that there is always room for reflection, learning and changing to good.

I don't know why you say
"exactly" as if I had agreed with you, the fact that I said that it would not be an epic story like the ones in Hollywood does not mean that I was disappointed, quite the opposite since if it were like that it would come out like the attempted Korean series "the silent sea" (netflix original) which wasn't bad but didn't impress much. In this case, the series tells us that it is not about being heroic in the Yankee style but about seeing these professionals work in their own way for humanity, what is interesting is seeing how the astronauts work and what scientific research they are doing, also according to interviews We know that the protagonists are 2 people who highly value life, so there will not only be comedy, investigation and romance, but it also promises a reflection on why we are alive. It is also the first time that a Korean production on TV tries to imitate zero gravity, the production team has worked very hard, the actors not only have harnesses that support them all the time but there are like 4 or 5 people holding each one of them. I think it's worth giving it at least a chance. Finally, being a TV kdrama it is obvious that it will have some clichés but that does not mean it will lack identity, you have to see it to give your opinion and not assume

I admit that it may not sound good knowing that the protagonists are in a romantic relationship with other people, however it is almost obvious that neither of them were really happy in their respective relationships. That love that blossomed on the space station, probably the protagonists will not necessarily express it freely, it is likely that they contain their feelings or in any case if something happens they may feel guilty but we still do not know anything about how these relationships will develop. However, these are not love triangles just because they want to have more drama, each of the characters has their personal convictions and objectives. If you don't want to give it a chance because you think it will be makjang or whatever you call it, that's your decision, as I said, it's not that it will be an epic story like Ridley Scott's Alien or something that tells about physics like Nolan's Interstellar or the tension that we lived in "Gravity" by Iñarritu.

But don't you think that's not main point of this drama. I mean yes rom com is important part. But it's happening…
The drama is not just about romance, it's more about learning the daily life of astronauts, plus the ML has a secret mission.

I have read a psychology forum about feeling attracted to another person while you are in a relationship and it is totally normal and common these situations. They mention that it depends on each person what to do with that feeling, if one starts dating 2 people at the same time it is cheating, but if your relationship was not going well from the beginning then it is better to end it (this does not mean that you do it for another person ), it is better to start something new if you were never happy in your relationship (I think this will happen in the kdrama), on the other hand if you feel attracted to another person while in a good relationship this can serve to help reinforce and value your current relationship . In any case, whatever happens in the kdrama, the romance will not be the focus, but the life of the astronauts, each one has their own way of living, can we judge them? As a viewer we are invited to do so but also to understand them (they are not perfect characters), it would be very foolish for us to assume what will really happen between the protagonists without even watching the series and being guided by an empty premise

He was not married, he is engaged (read carefully) and notice that the female protagonist is also in a romantic relationship according to the relationship image. The protagonists will first be enemies (it will be the enemy-to-lovers trope), but they will become friends first of all, probably after time they will end their relationships and start something new together. On the other hand, from the beginning of their announcement, they have emphasized that this kdrama was not intended to be like the typical Hollywood science fiction film where everything is epic, it will be more about the daily life of astronauts and their way of seeing life. They may not be perfect characters but they are faithful to their convictions. It is better to wait to see how it develops than to criticize and appear to be morally superior.
