When a romcom is romcom-ing

honestly, the title "Take Charge of My Heart" doesn't leave much of an impression on me. but okay, the title doesn't take away from how much fun this drama actually is. to me, this feels like a comeback call for the good old 2015-ish k-drama rom-coms, when romance didn't have to be buried beneath complicated storylines to keep things interesting. lately, i've seen too many dramas start with promising premises only to stumble when it comes to the ending. thankfully, this one manages to stay entertaining until the very end.

the premise itself is ridiculous, and i mean that affectionately. imagine being a human who needs a personal power bank to keep your heart going. yes, that's the story. if you decide to watch this, please leave your logic at the door because this is fantasy rom-com territory, and scientific accuracy is definitely not invited. there are moments when the whole thing makes absolutely no sense, but somehow, the story remains charming enough to keep you invested. if you're looking for something lighthearted, fun, and easy to follow without having to overthink every little detail, this might be right up your alley. just don't expect the laws of physics to survive this experience.

i'm genuinely happy to see kim young kwang returning to his rom-com territory. i've been following his projects for a while, and one of the reasons i love him in this genre is his expressiveness. as baek ho rang, he can be ridiculously cute, adorably lovestruck, and even a little pathetic when he's drunk in love, yet somehow, he never loses his masculine charm. there's something so endearing about the way he lets his expressions do the talking. he can look like a complete fool over the woman he loves without making his character any less manly. he doesn't have to sacrifice his masculinity to be adorable, and i LOVE that about him. meanwhile, my lovely chae soo bin is as doll-like as ever as na bo bae. i'm not entirely sold on her hairstyle in this drama, but it makes sense within the story, considering all the static electricity flowing through her body. i also appreciate the little details that make her condition feel more tangible: her phone has a flip case, her laptop is fully covered, and she puts on gloves before touching electrical objects. these small touches show how much thought went into bringing this unusual premise to life.

the dynamic between bo bae and ho rang is another reason this drama works for me. ho rang is the one person immune to her electrical power because he has an artificial heart of his own, which needs bo bae to recharge it. the whole situation is absurd, but their chemistry and dynamic are so much fun to watch that i can forgive the questionable logic. i also appreciate cha woo min as the second male lead. he genuinely likes bo bae, yet he understands her circumstances, respects her feelings, and never forces her to choose him. he knows when to let her go, and i'm especially glad the drama allows them to remain friends until the end. not every second male lead needs to turn into a bitter, jealous obstacle just because he doesn't get the girl. sometimes, a man can love someone sincerely and still respect her decision, and i love that this drama understands that.

overall, this drama reminds me why i fell in love with k-drama rom-coms in the first place. it's unapologetically rom-com, with a story that knows how to entertain without making everything unnecessarily complicated. the script is enjoyable, the camera work and directing are lovely, the OST blends beautifully with the scenes, and baek ho rang's house deserves a special mention because THAT PLACE IS GORGEOUS. it has that open, airy atmosphere while still feeling like the perfect home for an introvert. lately, i've found it harder to stay invested in dramas that build up grand expectations only to fumble their conclusions, so finding one that remains fun from beginning to end feels refreshing. Take Charge of My Heart may not make much sense if you think about it too hard, but perhaps that's part of its charm. sometimes, all a rom-com needs is a little chemistry, a ridiculous premise, a man who's hopelessly in love, and the willingness to have fun with it. turns out, this heart doesn't run on logic. it runs on electricity and romance.
