I know that in USSR it was illegal to do business and these kind of activities when you buy something and sell…
Thank you for the knowledge! >v<
Your comment motivates me to do a little 'research' about it and I've found (on Google lol) that in Communism, it's forbidden to profit from businesses that are outside of the 'state system'. That's why there are these 'state-owned stores' (where Ma Yan worked before: the first state-owned store in Ningyang).
But... If it's forbidden to own private stores, then why opening snack stores near the train station was not prohibited? Or perhaps... restaurants?
Ohh Communism... this ideology has always kept me wondering... I'm always confused while learning about it.
Just a random question what is Ma Yan's age, I'm on episode 2, so have many episodes to catch up to.
Correction of my previous answer hahaha! It's found out in the ep 20++ (and especially 30++) that Wang Xin was born in the 1960 and Ma Yan is one year younger than him.
He was 18 in the 1978 when he first became a train officer.
Dont think the trafficker plotline is fully solved actually i think Ma Kui giving the blind man Niu Da Li business…
I have another opinion tho~ >v<
Remember when the old man said his daughter was missing in the 1963 when she was 2 years-old? It means, his daughter was born in the 1961.
On the other hand, in the earlier episode it's stated that Yao Yuling is older by five months than Wang Xin. That's why when they dated, she asked him to stop calling her "Ling Jie" because they're of the same age. So when was Wang Xin born?
Wang Xin was born in the 1960. It was more so stated when his father acknowledged the mistake he did in the 1968 that led Ma Kui imprisoned by saying "My son was without a mother. He's just 8 years-old. I was afraid nobody would take care of him".
But--Ma Yan was 7 years old at that time, one year younger than Wang Xin (meaning: she was born in the 1961).
My point is, if someone is suitable to be the old man's lost kid, it should be Ma Yan rather than Yao... However I think Ma Yan is Ma Kui's REAL DAUGHTER. I don't know guys, what do u think?
...
As to why Ma Kui gave the old man Niu Dali's business card... I don't know... I can't remember anything hahaha :")

She's the same age as Wang Xin :") It's stated that in 1978 he's a new police recruit -- the job he got after graduating the police academy (is police academy a university? I think so)... Therefore Ma Yan's probably 21/22, 23 y.o. at most...
sounded funny 🤣 must be some communist expression of the time🤣 were they 'speculating' how to earn some…
I think... instead of speculation, the translation should use the word 'auction' instead, whereby a merchant sell his products to the highest bidder. It seems like so in the Wenzhou boy scenes, unless I lost focus when I watched it. If I remember correctly, the Wenzhou boy shouted "Oh, you want to buy it with xx yuan?", "And you want to buy it with xx yuan?!" indicating the other passengers were scrambling the chance to owned his products (and the ones who give the biggest money will own them).
I guess it's prohibited at that time because it seems like 'scamming', because remember in another scene where the man previously convicted by Ma Kuai and now selling watches by 'auctioning' them too, he said in the South a watch is worth 3 yuan, but in the North it could worth 10 yuan... a profit of 7 yuan is too high, I think.
.
Whereas speculating in term of business is like: a merchant selling his product to someone and received 10 dollars, and then he'll buy it back not long after that with 8 dollars -- knowing the price would fall. Thus he'd still get 2 dollars profit + his product back which he could sell to other people and recreate the cycle... I don't think the scene indicates that?

Anybody could explain anything?

Thank you for reading my 2-cents.
But I dunno whether it's allowed or not... but in reality, seeing the rise of capitalism in China after Deng Xiaoping... I bet it's allowed now
