It makes sense imo. Because her parents were questioning if their love is serious enough, so he made that decision to prove to her parents. Also, he just leaves his current company, not abandon his career, because it's inconvenient for his future family, how is this unrealistic? That's a commitment to relationship, it happens in real life too.
