The ML literally serves no purpose other than following the FL around, begging for her forgiveness like a sad dog, and protecting her. My God, he's so horribly written.

She repeatedly asked him to respect her boundaries. He kept breaking them. I feel sorry for her in that situation, not him. Being lonely doesn't permit you to stalk people.

"They want you to feel compassion! Towards a fellow human! In distress!"
I can't feel compassion for a man who can't control his impulses, regardless of what trauma he's dealing with. He's not even making an effort to respect JLF's plea for space.
The script is alright, why don't you try to analyze the main characters' motivations?Episodes 14 & 16 explained…
You think I dislike the characters because I don't understand them. I know LXY is a tragic character. That doesn't make his constant stalking any less creepy and pathetic to watch. I get that JLF feels betrayed and has developed trust issues. But that doesn't mean I can't hate how much of an ungrateful ditz she is at times. I get the characters are flawed, but I still find them and their relationship irritating to watch.
My issue with the writer is that they don't seem to know how to write flawed characters without making them irritating. It's to the point where I was rooting for the master to kick LXY out of the sect for being an obsessive creep. I'm not criticizing the drama for raising controversial topics. I'm criticizing it because I think it's poorly written.

I did analyze the characters, and they both suck. Regardless of LXY's trauma, he's still CONSTANTLY stalking someone who has REPEATEDLY asked him to stop. Sorry, but your trauma doesn't give you the right to stalk people.
You wrote: "While the only person who understands him cannot forgive him, she needs some time and space. He is afraid that if he gives her that space he'd lose her forever. He'd rather be hated than alone. This makes Lifei angry because this ignoring her opinion is exactly the type of behaviour that lead to his betrayal."
Because he's afraid of losing her, he's entitled to making her feel uncomfortable and stalking her? What kind of crazy logic is that? What you're doing is using his loneliness and other personal issues to excuse his creepy behavior.
"The more she rejects him, the more distressed he feels, the more he needs to gain control, so he easily snaps and oversteps in ep 14. He's kinda balancing on the verge of going crazy, drowning in his own mind."
LXY needs a therapist, not a girlfriend.
"Being betrayed is half the problem. She actually realised that his decision wasn't malicious back in Chufeng Academy, when they had a talk. But she also feels resentful because Xiuyuan, being their friend, disregards their opinion completely."
So JLF knows LXY didn't mean to hurt her. She knows JLF had to suffer the pain of killing his own brother and watching him die in his arms. She knows that he's been going above and beyond to make amends by helping her, putting his own health in jeopardy. What's her reaction? Shit on him and treat him like his crap. While her disappointment at LXY is justified, she is portrayed as an ungrateful ditz who attracts danger.
The scriptwriter decided the best move was to turn the male lead into a pathetic stalker and the female lead into an ungrateful, ditzy brat. And we’re supposed to root for this relationship?
LXY betrayed her trust. He acted out of desperation and nearly got her killed. That part isn’t debatable. But ever since, he’s done nothing except save her life again and again while she keeps walking straight into danger.
Her response? She treats him like shit. He grovels, stalks, and shrinks his entire personality down to obsessing over her. She stays petty, reckless, and completely unchanged.
Impressive work, writer. You took a flawed man trying to atone and made him both pathetic and creepy. You took a woman who had every right to be angry and turned her into a self-centered, ungrateful ditz who learns nothing and endangers herself constantly.
What is worse: being pathetically obsessive in love or being psychotically obsessive in love? Sorry, but I'm losing patience. LXY needs a freaking hobby instead of stalking JLF. How can any of you find this stuff romantic? It's creepy, and LXY gets away with it because the actor playing him is very good-looking.
Novel readers: Will JLF do some chasing in the future, or will LXY continue to chase JLF like a creepy and desperate stalker for the rest of the story? This is getting silly and exhausting to watch.
It's literally romance story so it will go in that direction only, maybe his mourning part was cut in those 7…
LXY went through such extremes to save his brother, only to watch him die in his arms. His priority in the aftermath should've been to mourn his brother for a while, not to follow the JLF around and apologize over and over. The drama treats the brother's death like an afterthought. While LXY betrayed JLF's trust, he ultimately saved her. In the end, LXY experienced the most pain because he literally had to kill his own brother. But somehow he's the one running around apologizing over and over.

I'm not saying he didn't break her trust. I'm not saying he shouldn't apologize and try to make amends. But reducing his character to a borderline stalker who constantly follows her to apologize over and over is pathetic, boring, and unimaginative.

Both characters suck. This romance sucks.

Did anyone actually read this script?
This is why a "fantasy" tag should be added to these dramas. Even if these types of green-flag men do exist, women don't typically want them.
When did I say that?
