Actually, despite being sad, the ending is truthful. YZJ was beyond cure, his body had been battling the poison all his life, so even if they could find the antidote it probably would work as a palliative measure.
About the ending, SMZ knowing he was poisoned from before is not really a surprise, she is a very clever girl, but knowing how YZJ is proud she preferred to keep it to herself and find the cure in silence. To me this is just endearing, their love and comprehension of one another is just amazing, something really mature and rare to see in dramas.
I believe the caravan in the last scene in the desert was SMZ last journey. Her dream was to be a peddler, so I would like to think she lived the rest of her life traveling, like YZJ has. And by the end, she would settle by the lake where the purple stars meet, and eventually reunite with YZJ.
It's not my ideal end, but I will have to work with that.
