Amazing story. Not for the faint of heart (the emperor was so far the most repulsive villain I’ve seen in a drama to date. Every scene with him, where he didn’t get his karma left me feeling so frustrated and pissed off. I wanted so badly for that standard scene at the end where the villain pushes his luck too far and meets a well-deserved and painful end, so the ending was disappointing to me from that aspect, as abandonment just doesn’t seem like punishment enough for everything he did to literally everyone. Although, one could say that for such a weak and cowardly man, true and final abandonment, taking her far beyond his control, is the thing that would hurt him the most, more than dying horribly. idk, I prefer full bloody painful vengeance…
Then there was the cut scenes… It breaks my heart that for all of the amazing, natural and realistic chemistry between the leads, the audience was cheated out seeing that manifest physically between them. We were tortured with all of the suffering and received very little to comfort us in return. Between that and the horribly edited cut scenes, the show was a 9 for me. But I don’t regret going along for the ride with this one. Which says a lot for the quality of the cast, the character development and the storyline. Because tbh, I’m usually just in it for the passion and romance when I watch these shows… 🤣. Sorry, not sorry.
Thank you so much for saving me the rest of the hours investment beyond where I got to (episode 6) before I desperately ran to the comments and reviews because indecision and letting life happen to oneself drives me absolutely bonkers. Great review, insightful, thorough and objective. I loved season 1 and anxiously started season 2 in anticipation of seeing my personal favorite (Xiang Liu and Xiao Yao) come to fruition. Alas, I am calling it quits on the series for the pure and simple fact that I am too idealistic to accept that settling for the least complicated, mediocre love option (over finding a way to triumph over the challenges to be with your soulmate) is an acceptable end to the love story of any character, let alone someone with her backstory. And I abhor weakness (completely agree with your characterization of Tushan Jing); frankly the only man who had the you-know-what to stop her from marrying someone she didn’t love is the only one who deserved to be her final choice in the end, even if the tragic nature of the story meant they’d never get to see happily ever. Not all on her obviously, he would have needed to make a clear and direct declaration, which to the point that I dropped, he hadn’t and didn’t seem like he was going to.
… finishes up through the end of episode 21. … throws hands (and remote) up in the air in exasperation.
Welcome to my rant. As a big fan of this genre and especially loving the low time commitment of the short ones, AND having just finished Dawn Amidst the Hidden Clouds, I gave this one a shot. I usually take comments and reviews with a grain of salt and try just about any of them, because who knows whether my taste is the same as other posters.
But my holy you-know-where, I can’t stand it when the script has one of the leads (usually the female) throw all logic and reason out the window and believe one of the villains over what she knows about the character of the other lead (usually male), especially when the story has her knowing him for yearsssss.
It is maddening. It is exhausting. It paints women as wholly illogical, weak and disloyal, and completely incapable of independent thought and judgment. Simply to create an unnecessary conflict point that they can (I assume) eventually overcome for the (sometimes short-lived) happy makeup phase before all you-know-where breaks loose and one of them dies. (I don’t know if that happened in this series because I have staged a one-person walkout on watching the rest of this series. 🤣)
I always scoff at the comments for various shows where posters want know if there’s a happy ending or use the comments to decide whether they want to watch a series or not. But, I now find myself owing all of you an apology. To my fellow comments section friends: I apologize for scoffing. I’ve decided to join the ranks of preemptive askers. 🤣
Thank you for reading my rant. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming already in progress. ❤️
The ML is mis-cast. Why give such an anti hero role to a baby faced actor? I saw that age wise he's 30 but he…
I though the exact same thing the first time I sat down to watch this. Went so far as to drop it after episode 1. However, I picked it back up again just to see what happens after where I left off, and you start to get used to it as the plot develops (currently on ep 6), or rather he starts to become more believable in the role as they develop his character within the storyline.
IDK, guys, I’m only 8 episodes in but I can’t stop smiling as I watch. It’s adorable. Also, three cheers for the green-flag MIL! first I’ve seen where the MIL is green-flag AND plays such an active part in the plot. So refreshing!
Is it just me or are the subtitles especially horrendous? I don’t even speak Mandarin and even I can tell the subtitles aren’t right. I wonder how much of the story is going over my head because of the poor subtitling. 🤦🏻♀️. Never seen it this bad on iQIYI.
So I’m not usually a fan of the fluffier dramas because they’re usually too far on the silly/ridiculously over-acted side. But after having my heart torn apart by only the first 20 episodes of The Rise of the Phoenixes, the naively romantic side of my personality needed some TLC, so I gave this series a try. I was pleasantly surprised. Currently watching season 4, and I can say this was exactly what the doctor ordered, without that overly childish undertone that usually makes me drop the fluffy ones. The comedy was mature, the leads’ chemistry was on point and I love the plot. No spoilers here but if you’re looking for something to help cleanse an overdose of toxic negativity, in life or on the screen, give this one a watch.

Anyways, thank you again! 😊
