There's something about guilt you are not looking at here, and that is blame. You need something to help you ease off the blame. And the instance they used in portraying it, is perfect. It's like exchange by barter. The pain doesn't totally go away. But whenever the thought of guilt comes, he will remember he was punched for it, and that brings ease to him. Until he forgives himself, he won't be in the right frame of mind for good decision-making.
