I don't think it's because of sensitivity that they try to ruin productions and target celebrities. After all, they actively go *searching* for things, sometimes decades old as this story attests, to find some pretext to attack and harass people. Collective and generational trauma was mentioned further up in the comments and I think a lot of it is to do with that. I do not condone the behaviour of toxic Knetz, but when people are so angry, spiteful and vindictive towards others over such minor matters it often means they are extremely unhappy in themselves. They literally need therapy and to work on their own personal issues, because the pain they cause others - and the resulting suicides especially - is inexcusable.

When used in the context of film and television, 'cult hit' or 'cult following' means a production wasn't a huge hit but still a moderate one with a core group of passionate fans. It's not a negative connotation at all. Doctor Who for example was a cult hit for decades until the 2005 'new' Who series exploded it into the mainstream. It's used this way in all English speaking countries as far as I know, which is fair for MDL to use since it is as you said international.
