Omg you're actually right. I never thought of it from this point of view. Initially I thought he already got over his wife and started to have feelings for Mo-eum because of what we have been seeing. For example, he was zooming into her picture and smiling very fondly and his subtle lustful desires towards her from time to time. In the convenient store he was holding onto the drink Mo-eum and him both drink and said, "I think I have to stop drinking this But I don't know if I can". He is basically saying I have to stop having feelings for her(aka mo-eum) but I don't know if I can. I think the reason why he rejected her has more to do with the society and less to do with him mourning his wife's death and thinking about his child. It's not that he is restraining himself for his kid because we can all clearly see Yeon du and Mo-eum gets along very well and mo-eum is very sincere towards her feelings for yeon-du.
