Where is love ??
loved the initial episodes, I won't lie. The start was actually good. The cinematography was pretty, the awkwardness of Hira felt real, and the whole dynamic of a quiet, bullied kid having a crush on the most popular guy in class - it was interesting. I was hooked at first because it felt different from other BLs. It wasn't too loud or over the top.But after like 2-3 episodes, it just went downhill for me. It became too much worshipping. I get it, admiring someone you like is normal, respecting them is also fine, but what Hira does is not admiration anymore. It's straight up crazy obsession. The way he calls himself Kiyoi's slave, the way he stalks him, follows him, takes pictures without permission, keeps his things - how is that supposed to be romantic?
And the worst part is the show tries to make it look like love. Like this is true love, this is devotion. But for me it was just uncomfortable. There is a very thin line between love and obsession and this show crossed it completely. If Kiyoi was a girl and Hira was a guy doing the same things in a straight drama, everyone would have called it creepy and toxic immediately. But because it's two boys, people are calling it cute and pure. I don't get that.
Kiyoi's character also annoyed me after a point. At first he's cold and that's okay, but he is so mean to Hira and still Hira keeps worshipping him. It's like he enjoys the attention, he enjoys that someone is obsessed with him. There's no healthy communication at all. One is always on the floor and the other is always looking down. How is that a balanced relationship?
I found it so annoying to watch after the middle episodes. The plot was just repeating - Hira misunderstands, Kiyoi gets angry, Hira cries and blames himself, then they have one soft moment and again the same cycle. It felt so dragged and forced.
And honestly the whole "my beautiful man" concept became cringe for me. Every two minutes it's "Kiyoi is beautiful, Kiyoi is god, I'm nothing". Bro has zero self-respect. I understand having low self-esteem but this was too much. It romanticizes self-hate and makes it look like if you hate yourself enough for someone, that's love. It's not.
I still watched till the end, I forced myself to finish it because I started it and I wanted to see if it gets better, if they actually show some growth. But no, even till the end it was the same worshipping. There was no real development where Hira learns to love himself or where Kiyoi learns to treat him like an equal. It was just cringe till the last episode.
I know a lot of people love this show and they find it beautiful and pure, and maybe for them it is. But for me, it was just hard to enjoy after a point. The initial episodes gave me hope that it would be a soft, realistic story about two different people falling in love, but it turned into a story about obsession and stalking being shown as love.
