The momentum on the petition is picking up again!! Less than 100 away from 7.5k!! Next stop 10k, which is what the director is aiming for!! Keep sharing!!! 💖
Honey it's a slowburn. And I find it ridiculous, zero romance? You can't read their eyes. That's too bad. Slowburn…
fr no romance after wang's fantasy scenes?? those gazes? acts of service? episode 7?? whaddafuck i sometimes think ive watched a different show to some of these people
It gives insight into his decisions around the show as well, which I really loved, and he delves more into the plot in season 2 so spoiler warning. Enjoy :)
I do not trust IQIYI tbh but I hope they don’t mess this upðŸ˜ðŸ¤ž
He does recount aspects of his own first love. He has said in a podcast recently that it is a personal story. There's more details in a Time article about it.
I find it a bit concerning to hear this sort of stuff said, as he said he felt very sad for those who were gay in the 70s who never got their happiness, and wanted to highlight those stories too.
He also has a conservative Catholic upbringing, and came out to his family during the filming of the movie, which is pretty courageous and terrifying.
You can hate his work all you want, but I think saying that he has internalised homophobia issues, or that he wants to rip his gay couples apart is pretty egregious. He did a podcast recently where he talks about LGBTQ+ media in Taiwan and China, the setting of this show in terms of the societal context, and if you want more information on what he actually said about YNEH, you can read the times article.
It sounds to me like you don't like his work which is fine, but you want to push this narrative of internalised homophobia or making gays miserable onto him, and I don't think that's okay unless you've got solid proof of that. We want to be a supportive community when it comes to sharing LGBTQ+ stories and media, and maybe calling an openly gay director internally homophobic and wanting to make his gay couples miserable is not it. He changed some aspects of the On1y one to be less homophobic too, so I really can't see these homophobic or misery creating tendencies.
And it's so easy to understand, they have the parallel situation of the 2 teachers. "Why are you avoiding me?"…
DAMN I didn't even pick up that with what the teacher said and what happened with Wang and his tanking of his grades. Time to rewatch, I feel I missed so much of the episode only watching it once.

calling it a bromance is homophobic, im seeing people call the show homophobic too bc of no NC / kissing scenes. how can so many people have so little media literacy and emotional intelligence to not understand the storyline, ending and frankly the sexual awakening slapping us all in the face ? you're so right that they wanted something out of it, and mad they didn't get it.
Reading some of the comments here it feels some of you watched a completely different show… how can you call…
fr... it felt more romantic than many shows with kiss and NC scenes because it was a romance, a beautifully told and acted romance at that. i think they must be watching a different show...
damn, i literally can't believe there's people calling this show homophobic because they didn't kiss and have an outright confession at the end. like... wtf.... you think that's homophobic? struggling with your sexuality? with what appropriate boundaries are at the age of 17? in an unaccepting society? no this does not mean that gays can only be miserable, the season ended with hope, of looking forward, of breaking things down to start in a new direction. with realisation of love and a sense of courage for the future. i feel sick seeing some comments saying this is homophobic. i was alive and in the closet in 2012. i have experienced homophobia even in the year of our lord 2024 and oh brother, the on1y one is NOT homophobic nor are either of the main characters. please do some reading and introspection.
it's a bit concerning that there's a rise in people saying that gay relationships can't be depicted properly if there's not sex and kissing because that's what real gays do!!! like obviously that happens in gay relationships, but what about those that don't have a lot of physical touch? maybe they are touch averse, or struggle with words? difficult situations where they can't be open and loud and proud? do they not also deserve to have their stories told? it's verging on fetishism to see so many people say that something is homophobic because it doesn't show sex and making out or whatever. yikes.
also the director did say there would be more intimacy in a second season. the director is also out (im pretty sure), has marched in pride parades and has dispelled stuff about Jiang Tian apparently being homophobic.
apparently homophobia is when what i wanted to happen in this bl show didn't happen so it's homophobic :(( get a grip. as a gay person, that attitude feels invalidating and like i have to love a certain way. IN THE BIN
