and yes I have not watch but I too wish he would stop staring longingly at her in those situations. but I personally still don't think ignoring is a weak self respect here regardless his ex is there and not coming to his defense. that would just imply that she still affecting him (which she is and probably want her to know that)
but in other scenario or drama if the leads was put in this situation and still madly in love with their I wish the leads would not make it obvious that their ex still very much matter to him

i do find fault in your idea of self respect is to leave bc I start screaming when he decide to go to bathroom whatsoever and I stop watching there.
I did not agree with him staring longingly whatsoever hence why I said if it were me I would start talking to my friends and just let him yap, ignoring is the best reaction. since I have not watch EP4 he must have give SML satisfaction bc he is responding or basically letting know he was affected or staring at FL. If he ignore them from the start, focus on something else like conversing with his friend, eat coolly while probably sneering at SML then SML will definitely feel angry too bc his stupid words can't go through ML head. also, most of what he spoke are not really a fact so it is not that hard for ML to ignore and find him pitiful instead.
genuinely idk why you think my point of him staying is bc he can't move on from his ex, my point is for all kind of situation, it doesn't matter if his ex was there or not I still want his ass to stay and do not give any reaction. being unfazed is the best kind of reaction you can give to those who want to hurt you and one is not insane for doing that. my self respect is not letting people who disrespect me gain the satisfaction that they are hurting me and leaving would do exactly that bc we are letting our opponent know we are affected. the best way to handle it is to straight up ignore him, pretend you are unfazed. if I were him I would start talking to my friends or take out my phone and start watching something. guess I am not sane person then but at least I don't let those who want to hurt me achieve their goals and acting unfazed will only make them more agrrieved, I am torturing myself but they will be tortured too.
