Newtopia: When Your Love Life is Deadlier Than the Zombies?‍♀️?‍♂️

Just two episodes in, and I’m already hooked—so much so that if I ever find myself in a zombie apocalypse, I’d want this cast by my side. Newtopia delivers a thrilling yet hilarious take on survival, making the dire situation unexpectedly entertaining.

At its core, the drama follows “Sweet Jae Yun,” a late-drafted soldier, and his girlfriend, “Darling Young Joo,” who are on the verge of a breakup when a zombie outbreak flips their world upside down. What sets Newtopia apart is its fresh premise— a secret military airbase hidden within a high building in Seoul. The setting alone adds a unique twist to the genre.

The casting feels meticulously chosen to fit the narrative, with each character bringing their own charm and wit to balance the nail-biting tension with well-timed humor. It’s an unconventional approach for a zombie drama, considering most in the genre lean heavily into pure horror or dystopian despair. Jisoo and Park Jeong Min, in particular, stand out with performances that make the absurdity of the situation all the more engaging.

That said, no drama is without its flaws. The pacing feels uneven at times, sudden scene transitions can be jarring, and some CGI moments could use more polish. But honestly? The sheer energy, comedic timing, and chemistry of the cast overshadow those shortcomings—at least for now. I have high hopes that as the series picks up, it’ll smooth out those rough edges and deliver an even more gripping ride.

If the first two episodes are anything to go by, Newtopia is shaping up to be an exciting, unpredictable, and refreshingly lighthearted take on the zombie apocalypse genre. I’m definitely sticking around for the rest.
