I think they’re almost always together, except in separation arch in ep 18 till 23. Especially in early eps, they are always together. And even when they’re separate, it’s still good to watch.
For me, their romance is heart fluttering in early eps. I love it. There’s so much fun scenes.

The real culprit 16 years ago who made prince chengde and general xie died isn’t Wei yan. But the one who kills the emperor and many who know the case is him. Because all good people he knows already died, for the people, he made a big decision by become the villain to clear the court. He kill everyone who knows the case. So many died even concubines and princes.
The court at that time is already murky and corrupt, and the emperor is too affectionate to a prince who isn’t suitable to become the heir and its faction. The emperor wants to kill prince chengde, So when prince chengde died, Wei Yan takes that big decision.
Even though he’s not the one who start the tragedy, he feels guilty. He said that it’s because of what he said in front of prince chengde in a meeting is the cause the war. That’s why later when he’s in prison, he wants to take all the blame that he’s the only villain and said nothing else. He wants the name Qi family (imperial family) to keep being pure.

Personally, I think Wei Yan is a really grey character. He’s not good, but not really bad either.
Even though he’s bad, he still thinks about the people, not like Li faction who sacrifice many people to attack Wei Yan.
Li faction is really corrupt. That’s why Xie Zheng not support both faction and decide to defeat all of them and make Bao’er the emperor.
XZ will save her from Sui Yanqing. Then CY will meet XZ again. He’s in a really bad condition though.
To save changning, sui yanqing stab XZ with a spear I think. He’s in serious condition. CY comes when he’s still a sleep or coma I forget about the detail. CY just realize that it’s her husband who’s injured and crying.
i, for one, prefer early separation at the onset rather than later, but one time is enough please.
Unfortunately, there will be second separation when XZ and CY both know about CY’s parents real identity.
XZ come back to his hometown and ask 108 lashes for punishment in ancestral hall because he feels guilty. he can’t let go of his feeling for CY. The good thing is after this punishment, he search CY immediately.

Actually, the events in the drama aren’t exactly as in the novel. Some becomes early like gongsun meeting with chang yu and some becomes later. Some they change it too, like rice merchant. In the novel, xie zheng only meeting Zhao when discussing about rice, not directly meeting qimin. Despite that, the main plot is almost the same. And I think the changes are for the better so far.
