Falling in love with a man you've known for a very short time and who was once married to your sister you never knew is much more normal (even from a modern perspective) than falling in love with the husband of the sister you grew up with, even if you were all children at the time. In short, there's nothing really strange, even from a modern perspective, in the emotions of FL and ML who are not related by blood and just met (in terms of not many years ago).
