They just messed up the whole storyline in the last 10 eps. The most dumb part was that the emperor wanted to make fan changyu a consort. If he takes her as a consort she most probably have to give up her power in jinzhou and they would have to appoint another general for the post. So what benifit will he get from that.

I got confused with the back story, in ep 38 about wei yan
After watching ep 40 my understanding is that the previous emperor feared that the late crown prince would usurp the throne so he needed a way to kill him off. He forged a letter from consort shu( she was wei yan’s love interest) to wei yan asking him to save her life so that he will not reinforce the crown prince in jinzhou and will return to capital. He also had instructed lord changxin to not provide reinforcement for the crown prince. This is the reason why lord changxin claimed that the tiger tally was fake. Consort shu died in the fire of eastern palace. Wei yan eventually forced the previous king to abdicate the throne. Xie Zheng’s mother knew that wei yan returned to capital because of consort shu and believed he was the one who betrayed her husband. She thought that wei yan would kill xie zheng so that he never investigate the truth. So she commit suicide so that wei yan had some guilt and will not kill his nephew. It was kind of a dumb plot but I have seen many dumb plots till now. They really messed up the last ten episodes due to dumb writing.
The story had a lot of plot holes but overall it was a good drama. The pacing was really good. But I think they messed up the last 10 episodes. For example yu qian qian was a transmigrator but they showed only little about it. I think Fan Changyu easily defeating two seasoned generals without much effort is just low effort story writing. Xie Zheng is said to be the most powerful general but there was not a single proper battle for him. This is one of the few historical dramas which has heavily shown intimate scenes. Like qi min and yu qian qian bath scene was unexpected.
This is a great drama. The only downside is the cgi effects. It was pretty bad in few episodes but I think it is manageable because I have seen worse than this
It was worth watching. The start was a little bit slow paced but after that you get hooked up. It is the first time I finished a cdrama. I usually watch kdrama but from the past year i am watching cdrama but unable to finish any of them due to their sheer length
