Yeah, because I read the novel too, I kinda pity him a bit. It's because of He Yuansheng (HRF's father) and his wife's decisions to send him to the village for recovery because the doctor said that he wouldn't live for long (In the novel, He Yan and He Rufei were cousins born on the same, on spring equinox, while HRF was born weak, HY was born healthy). By the time he recovered at sixteen (means he actually can go home), He Yan ran away from home because HYS planned to marry her to Song Taotao and joined the army and became General Feihong, but still using his name.

In the novel, Shen Muxue is more irritating than Xu Pingting honestly.. *in the novel, she is the physician at Xiao Jue's army (In the drama they changed her to Song Taotao. She likes Xiao Jue to the point following him to the army) and in the novel, she was the one who revealed that He Yan is a female in palace banquet.

And of course he yan was like don't joke with me and chu zhao said "I'm not joking" and pestering her like "I can be good to you too" but he yan said "we're not the same kind people" and after awhile, Xiao Jue barged in. And then He Yan dragged Xiao Jue out.

In the novel, Chu Zhao stay alive and live in Jiyang. He opened a calligraphy and painting shop. He met he yan and xiao jue years later when xiao jue and he yan visit Jiyang for the Princess marriage (the little girl they saved from kidnapping).
